Saddest of sad songs . .
« on: 16 Apr 2010, 11:47 pm »
Not gonna pull any punches. Go to YouTube and type Carla White Dream in the search field.  From a short poem by Langston Hughes.  Hope you can listen on your system or with good phones.  Drink two glasses of wine first.  If you've loved somebody for a long time, you'll see.  It's so simply put.

The most Heartbreaking, Achingly Beautiful Lyrics married to a Plaintive Melody that is so expressive, it literally created a Genre of Music.

Right on to both of these tunes. They are legit drags in the most beautiful sense of the word. The "Wee Small Hours" reference always takes me back to some extremely somber moments; sad times indeed!

Frank's whole excellent album Only The Lonely qualifies, too, dunnit.  Hey, Zach, good to hear from your wise old heart.

BTW, the lady does a really fine version of Harlem Nocturne on this with Lew Tabackin on tenor.  I can't take too much of her at one time she sings with such melancholy.  Heavenly influenced by Billie Holiday, I think you can agree.

She left this world a couple of months later.

Nap- I gotta compliment you on your choice.  Not long ago I was listening to The Living Road by her and the song at the end is Soon This Space Will Be Too Small.  You gotta hear this.  Knowin what we now know, it's a tough, tough listen.  And I'll give your song a whirl tonite.

Thanks, Jim. I'm a longtime fan of Lhasa, I know all her songs by heart... The saddest thing is ... she knew.... all the time....

A huge loss for humankind.

Or, any song by him for that matter.  He can really pull out the emotions with his singing and his songs.

Not really my kind of music - but a friend introduced me to a song by Muse:  Unintended.  Very sad indeed.

Agreed. But I've never heard a really great version. The original isn't sung slow enough and the almost rollicking guitar spoils the mood, IMHO. BJ Thomas got the tempo right but wasn't a good enough singer. Still waiting for a definitive version.

Julie London owns this song.  Ella does it on Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie and if anyone would give you doubt it would be her.  She doesn't, however.  Talk about a classic.  Thanks.

Van Morrison and the Chieftains: "Carrickfergus" - truly mournful.

And in another vein, Joan Baez's Birmingham Sunday:

Do you enjoy the Cassandra Wilson version?
