Best picture quality transfers to dvd list
« on: 5 Feb 2004, 04:06 pm »
This list is for picture quality only for references and should be chosen on that basis alone as movies that rate an 8-9 rating as there are no
 10's imo..

No animaition or tv shows please.

An asterick is one nomination for removal from the list because of artifacts.
Two negative votes for any movie removes that movie.

Bad Boys 2
Pitch Black
Seabiscuit
Underworld*
Blade
True Romance directors cut
Driven
LOTR......all
Matrix...all
Desperado SB
Starship Troopers SB
Gattaca SB

Video quality is important, but -- just as in music -- the content is key.  Sure, I'd rather have both, but I'd take good movies/music poorly recorded over well-filmed/recorded dreck.  Some of the movies on your list fit both criterion IMHO.

Chris

Chris, the idea here is to reccomend quality transfers so if you know of some that are not dreck to you that you feel you can reccomend....feel free to do so......as that is the idea.
However if there is a problem whith the video quality in any of the listed movies feel free to mention it.

Another thread can be used to decide what movies are good based on content alone.

For instance Sling Blade was a decent flick and I can watch it on my 35 inch monitor but can not watch it whith my projected 110 in screen or reccomend it because the transfer is third rate.

If consumers let the industry keep giving us second or third rate transfers regardless of content, we have only ourselves to blame IMHO.

Are we talking just the transfer from the film? Or the overall video quality?

Because Underworld was too compressed, and doesn't look as good as it should be. But the transfer seems fine, but it's a little hard to tell w/the compression artifacts.

I also didn't think Gladiator looked so great. I think that had more to do with compression again.

I will add to the list though with some other good quality discs (both transfer & bitrate)

The Big Hit SB
Hollow Man SB
Spider-Man SB
The Transporter (Japanese 2 disc pressing)
Equilibrium (Japanese pressing)
Dark Angel Season 1 & 2 (Japanese box sets)
Avalon (Japanese "Memorial Box" edition)
Taxi
Taxi 2
Taxi 3
Armageddon Criterion Edition
The RocK Criterion Edition
Bring It On
X-Men
X-Men 2

I'm sure there's a few that I'm not recalling at the moment as this was just done from memory.

Both....but mostly the overall look on your display whith your gear.

I see compression  artifacts in dark scenes of pretty much all movies on dvd so that is  one of the reasons why the rating of 8-9 on quality picture is being used instead of 10.

How about one nomination to put a movie on the list and two negative votes for picture artifacts to remove any given movie.

Does this sound fair...or should the movies questioned be moved to the bottom of a list as still being some of the best quality wise?

The Resident Evil SuperBit looks great, and of course it starts Milla.  That alone vaults the flick into "Classic" status.

OK, I added a few to the list which is located in the original post.

Feel free to add to the list or add a negative to any movie that does not rate at least an 8 on picture quality.
