Is it my DVD or DVD player?
« on: 26 Dec 2002, 05:00 pm »
I just bought a brand new Onkyo system, hooked everything up, sat down to watch K19, and all HTS hell broke loose.  The dvd got all the  way up to the intro and started to skip and make garbling noises.  I took the dvd back to Hollywood Video and exchanged for another one.  Popped it in and LED on my dvd player says dvd error.  Any idea what the problem is?

I had this problem with a DVD once before, and there was no visible smudges or anything on it.  But once I cleaned it off, it worked fine.  If that doesn't work for you, then clean your player with a lens cleaner.

Have you tried it with a new store bought DVD, & not a rental? Rentals quite frequently are either dirty or damaged.

The lens of your player shouldn't be dirty as it's a new player.

These are rental discs, right? The average person has no clus how to treat DVD's and treat them just as bad as CD's. Doing so ruins DVD's, which is why I don't like renting DVD's especially renting from places like Hollywood & Blockbuster.

If you're trying this out with rental disc I highly suggest you try one that's not a rental.

But if you get the same problem with a non-rental disc than I'd say there's a problem with your player. A problem related to either a bad laser, or a mis-alignment problem.

If it's a player problem I suggest you take it back to where you bought it and have them do a DOA swap for you.

Hi, if you get this problem on a new player and new DVD combo and it persists across titles, I would suspect the DVDP. Cleaning the disc should clear things up. If not, I would take the player back to the shop you got it from and also give them the DVD that causes the problem (make them sign for acceptance). It's up to them to provide you with a working player.

I took it back to the dealer and they tried it out to verify it was doing what I said it was and they gave me a new one.  Thanks everybody for your input
