which amp for eminence alpha

ok my ob project is coming together, I have the baffles almost finished, except the finish, I have a pair of 8" full range drivers and the alpha's. I will be running the full range drivers through a behringer eq and the alpha's through a behringer crossover with an amp for each. what amps are you guys using. My room will be small, say 5m x 5m x 2.5m I would think the amp for the full range will be 25w. I had a suggestion from someone to use a pa amp of 1 kilowatt!

The PA amps will certainly work OK, but I personally feel there are a lot better options. I have a 125w NAD power amp that I have used for a while, with very good results. Amps like these are much more musical than the pro pa amps, with usually a lot less noise. Even a good sub plate amp would be a better option , but you would need 2 to do it properly. Just my opinion mind you  :thumb:

Lots of variables when it comes to powering woofers on OB.

I have used a plate amp, and am currently playing around with pro amps.

Both can do a great job - I have a pro amp running my sub in my HT.

In my case, the plate amp was better, because it was a better match for the output of my preamp.  I will be looking around for another plate amp, and selling my pro amp, I just cannot get it to work correctly in this install.

I've had good success using Emotiva BPA-1s in bridged mode for my dual subs (NHT-SW2s). The BPA-1 is no longer made, but Parts Express sells a clone of it under its Dayton brand:

Versatile little amp, and with the volume on the front, amount of bass can be easily adjusted when desired.

This probably won't work for you Versus since you are East of the pond, but I thought I would provide this link for others that might be reading this thread.

You definitely don't need a kilowatt of power for the Alpha's.  I run a pair of two ways (fe103e OB over Alpha 15 in H-frame) with a passive cross over from my Onkyo stereo receiver (40w/ch) and have had no problems or complaints.

what size is your room? I have had recommendations for 1kw amps and others are saying less power, I think I need to try what I have first. I will be running my ob's bi-amped to give me more control.

Paul, you really dont need 1000w's no way. You will easily get by with 150w or so. I find my 300w plate amps very good, but thats really over kill. If you have an amp there already, just set it with that, and then decide what you want to go up to.  :thumb:

My room is 16ft X 14ft.  Speakers pulled ~4ft out from walls w/ listening position ~10ft away from speakers.  Big, open, detailed sound that still brings a smile to my face when listening to quality recordings.  Of course, it's just the opposite with poor quality recordings... but that's life.

If you've got something on hand, then definitely try that first.  If it works, then it ain't broke.
