Fastening acoustic panels
« on: 10 Apr 2010, 07:27 pm »
I rent the house I currently live in. I have used thumbtacks to fasten wall mounted 24"x24"x2" foam panels. Deodorant or toothpaste can fill the holes when I move out. I don't want to do this with the ceiling panels, as it would tick me off to find a tack or three on the floor with my foot one day.

I would like to know thoughts on how to hang ceiling treatments without breaking the lease, or otherwise screwing up the place and losing the deposit when I leave. A better way the hang the wall panels would be welcome, too.

Yes, they are foam. As they are only 2" thick, I am thinking of doubling them up in spots, such as behind the speakers and directly behind the listening position. The tacks I am using allow me to move them around for experimentation, but I would like to fasten them more securely eventually. The ceiling poses the biggest problem, I don't want holes, and I would like to keep the paint intact.

glue cardboard squares to the back and then attatch to the wall or ceiling with Funtack. Works for me

Excellent! I have Blu Tack that I use between my monitors and stands, is this the same type of stuff? I thought of it first, but it would mess up the foam, the cardboard is a great idea.

The funtak will not hold to the foam thats why I glued the cardboard squares in each corner with liquid nails. I think blu tack is the same

I use these torx head screws that have very small heads that you can hide in the sound panel fabric. Find the
studs or ceiling joists, run them through the frames at a slight angle and bury the heads in the fabric and/or paint the heads to match.

Whoops  I just noticed they're foam panels :duh:. Oh well this does work well for GIK type panels.

Apply some sort of lightweight backing to the panels and use industrial velcro.Chances are you will not need much to hold them up.I use this velcro to hold up ASC Sound Panels and they work well.I found that foam is really difficult to stay up without fatigue, hence the backing.Good Luck!
