I did listen carefully, and although it's currently fashionable to be down on Whitney (for obvious reasons), her voice is noticeably clearer and smoother in her rendition (but I don't know what her voice is like today).
 
On the other hand, the young singers from America's Got Talent, 11 year old Bianca Ryan singing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", and 14 year old Thia Megia singing "I Am Changing", both sounded better to me than the Jennifer Holiday versions.
