Anybody did listen and compared the Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD and the Oppo BDP-83 (or BDP-83SE) blue ray players ?

Especially listening cd in stereo mode.

What was the result and which sound best ?

From memory someone might have compared it and there might be a post in the Bryston Circle.  Try a search of that circle.

Also, over at the AVS forum, they have a thread on the Oppo BDP-83 vs. other Blu-Ray players so it is likely there is someone who has compared them.

Neither is as good as a PS3...

Really?  I do own both.   I don't have them in the same system but have played them lots.  The PS3 is a nice platform and I like it.  I suspect being good Blu-Ray players there won't night and day differences on Blu-Ray itself.  The PS3 can't touch the Oppo upconverting standard def. DVDs.  It also obviously lacks analog outs for something wanting to use them with a processor without HDMI.  The PS3 also does not have a coax digital out.  Not going to make a difference for Dolby Digital, however I'd rather have a coax out for music.  I don't have any games for the PS3 and even though I have not used the hard drive capabilities I having it.  The PS3 also doesn't play the same formats as the Oppo (like SACD - except for certain models and DVD-A).  So you have both?

Levi

I tried both.  I also had the Denon.  PS3 is a joke.  The BDP-83SE with Sabre DAC Chip?  I think you should check the EE DAC if you want a better sound.

The Oppo BDP-83 is great for the money.  However, the Pioneer BDP-09FD betters it in sound and PQ.  The again, the Pioneer 09FD costs more.  Some people swear by the modified Oppo.  To each of it's own.  In the end, it all depends on your budget.  :D

There is a link on AVS Forum.  You can read my comments and experience about the Blu-ray player.   :thumb:

The Oppo can do things the Elite unit cannot.  For those of us who have DVD Audio, SACD, etc, the Oppo (with the upgraded audio section) is a best buy.

Anybody see the threads on the Lexicon and Oppo as essentialy the same units?

You are right, the Oppo is a universal player "master of nothing".  LOL.  I use an Esoteric for SACD player.  My point is the Oppo is a great value but it will not replace the sound quality of a true audiophile SACD or Red Book player.  That's just me.  :thumb:

Lexicon and Oppo are the same unit but different price.  ;)

Levi now exit's the building.

I have a Modwright modded Oppo.  I like all that it does.  It blows away my Marantz DV9600 universal on audio (which I had previously compared to a friend's Sony XA-9000ES SACD player on SACD and they were close).  I put the DV9600 in the basement.  I still use a Bryston DAC with the Oppo for both CD and DVD-A (as the Oppo passes it via coax) as it is just better at audio.  I'm sure if I got a modded SACD stand alone player it would be better than the Oppo.  I only have about 275 SACDs so right now it is not something I'm thinking about.

Hi Phil,

I am curious about what it is you prefer about the Bryston DAC, compared with a Modwrighted Oppo?

Phil A

The Modwright is not terrible.  It images well but just not all well as the Bryston and does not have the dynamics or the same degree of separation.  I have an old Micromega DuoPro DAC that still sounds good and I have it in the secondary basement system vs. using the Marantz DV9600 for CD for similar reasons.  It was said earlier by Levi, the Oppo is a jack of all trades that does everything decently.  The modded Oppo is much better, it took doing everything decently to doing everything very well but I would not equate very well to killer audiophile sound quality.  I had the Bryston CD player before the Bryston DAC (I decided to sell the CD player and bought a 3 week old DAC for about the same money).  When I bought the CD player I did compare it to my Micromega  DAC and the Micromega despite its age was very close to the Bryston CD player in many ways except for the bass which is not well defined, especially if your speakers can play down low.  The Micromega DAC actually sounds better in the basement system as I have old B&W P6s which probably drop off between 35-40HZ.  I have so many things in the main system, I like having one machine that can do lots.  I have a LD player and a DVD recorder in addition to the Oppo and that's one of the reasons I sold the Bryston CD player as the Oppo makes an excellent transport and I'm likely to get something to interface with my home network too.  If I think I could live without something, I'd have no problem selling it or rotating it to the secondary basement or bedroom systems.

Many thanks. Nicely described.
