Has anybody had a listening session with  one of the Gedlee offerings and any of the GR Research V series?

I don't think you'll find a direct comparison as they aren't the most popular choices.  I love GR-Research...I've heard/owned many of Danny's speakers.  I also currently own the Gedlee Abbeys (and have heard Earl's setup).  I own a GR OB servo sub, as well.

The Abbeys have incredible resolution and are extremely dynamic.  They throw a huge soundstage and image really well.  The Super Vs are a Coaxial open baffle design which should be fairly dynamic and throw a big soundstage, but most likely the image will be more diffuse.  The OB servo subs used for the bass portion of the Super Vs are fantastic.  I'd go with the Abbeys again if I were choosing today, especially if you don't have a huge room.  The Constant Directivity design helps them work better in a real room.

I heard some of the GR Research speakers a few years ago at a show and they were ok.

I've heard a lot of coax speakers over the years and have yet to find one that I really like.

I own a pair of Earl's speakers, so I guess that tells you what I'm willing to pry open my wallet and pay for. :)

I have read about the GedLee offerings and imagine they sound OK.

I have heard many boxed speakers and have yet to find one I like better than the OBs I have heard.

I have built a few of the GR offerings including a full OB version of the OB5 (modified) and am currently building a set of the V-1s.  I guess that tells you what I'm willing to pry open my wallet and pay for.

Sorry for ths totally useless post.

Best,
Ed

Yes, at least I had heard both of what the OP was asking about. ;)

Sorry Turkey, just a little friendly ribbing, probably doesn't come across too well on the net.  You mentioned hearing the GR offering a few years ago, the V series is only a year or so old.  FYI, the V series doesn't sound the same as Danny's previous offerings, at least the models I have built and or heard.

Ed

These kinds of comparisons are hard to make because of boxed v. open.  The only real way to compare is in your room with your electronics.  Other than that, and it's just guessing.  (It's hard enough to compare boxed v. boxed. let alone boxed v. open.)

I don't remember the model, but it was an OB and I think it had a coax driver. I just assumed that he designs his speakers to have a similar sound like most designers do.

It was at an AK Fest in someone's room, and I was glad when they put them away and switched to some other speakers. (ACI I think.)

It's always best to compare in your own room.

However, I have only heard one pair of OB speakers that sounded even decent IMO, and that was the Orion.

I've heard quite a few coax speakers that sound kind of echo-ey and blurred. I've just never cared for them.

What I heard a few years ago didn't motivate me to go running to hear more GR Research speakers. Take it with a grain of salt, but it's my impression of what I heard.

Danny probably voices his speakers similarly but a MTM OB (all of his previous OBs that I am aware of) with 5" mid bass units and a planer tweeter and boxed bass section will still sound different than an OB based on a 12" coax driver using a open backed compression (no longer compression) driver with 4 12" servo woofers.  If a designer's speakers didn't sound different from one another there would be no reason to design more than one speaker.

BTW, if you were "glad when they put them away" I seriously doubt they were a properly implemented GR speaker.

Ed

OP, sorry for getting OT, now back to the original scheduled topic

I'm curious if anyone can chime in to the differences with the Abbey's versus the Nathan's? What would I lose out on if I went with the Nathan's?

With anyone who has ordered a kit...are the cabinets already put together? The Harper kit looks like the cabinets are put together already but the Abbey looks the cabinets are flatpacks...

Turkey,

There's a thread somewhere, I believe in the GR circle, in which an owner directly compares his Orions to the GR Venuette. He concludes that it's roughly a tossup when it comes to sound quality. Keep in mind that the Venuette is the entry level offering of the GR V series open baffle line.
