SPDIF OUT on the BDA-1

Guys

  I cannot see how this (SPDIF OUT on the BDA-1) might integrate into both a 2 channel and 5.1 system. If going through the BDA-1 would the front 2 channels be upsampled? Thanks. How have you guys used it in your systems? Thanks.

The SPDIF out on the BDA-1  is a 'Pass-Through'.  So whatever signal comes in gets passed 'as is' to the next gear down the line.

if it is bypassed then it has NO advantage of the BDA-1's signal treatment?!

True, but the passed through signal may be used to feed a receiver or processor for 5.1 HT use when you aren't using the BDA for serious two channel listening. The pass through is a convenience to have the signal available to feed a second system.

Why would you go through the BDA when you can go directly from something like a DVD player directly to your receiver/processor? I guess if you only have one digital input for coax on your receiver/processor you have to go this way. There is no advantage I'm told in the upsampling of 2 channels when going passthrough.

I use the analog outs from my Oppo BDP-83 Blu Ray player directly into my McIntosh MX120 processory. That way I take advantage of the new sound formats offered on BluRay because the Oppo does the decoding. I does take some adjusting on the trim levels from movie to movie though, especially the bass. The coax signal does come quite close to the new audio formats but I'll continue to experiment with the analog out method and won't be using the passthrough on the BDA-1.

If you used your receiver/processor for 5.1 HT listening, but wanted to use the BDA for high quality two channel listening, how do you propose to feed the two devices from a single SPDIF output on a DVD player? - splitters are not allowed on that interface. This is the reasoning for a SPDIF pass through.

 I'd run my BCD-1 into the BDA-1 and onto the processor's Balanced inputs. Then I'd run my Oppo Bluray either analog outs to the processor or coaxial out which will be the case when I order the SP3 and will let the processor do the decoding.
   Now I understand that in a situation where you have one source, passthrough would be a valuable option.
