Ellis 1801-TL

Can anyone please provide feedback on their listenining experiences with the Ellis 1801-TL?

It should be similar to the Song Towers with the dome tweeter, but with more extended bass from what I have read.

Please comment. Thanks, Music Lover

I'm afraid you won't get many responses to this question.  The 1801-TL is a brand new design and none have shipped to customers yet.

But anyone who has experience with the original Ellis 1801b can tell you basically what they sound like.  The 1801-TL's will sound pretty much the same, but with greater bass extension.

As to which one would be a better choice, you are trading bass extension for power handling.  The original 1801b's will handle more power.  The 1801-TL's will play quite a bit deeper, but this requires the woofer to move more air.  So it cannot handle as much power.

If you like your music loud, the regular 1801b's are your best bet.  But if you listen at moderate volumes and would like the extended bass, the 1801-TL's would be preferable.  I hope this helps.

This is not what you asked about, but the HT1-TL is the cutest speaker in the Salk linup!   I expect the 1801-TL will look the same.

Hmmm, the HT1-TL has the ribbon tweeter for only 200 bucks more. I would go for the HT1-TL instead.

Jim, how does the HT1-TL and 1801-TL go lower in the bass than the Songtowers which have two mid-woofers?

It's not quantity that matters.  Two smaller-sized midwoofers as in the SongTowers don't go as low as the single mid-woofer in the HT1- and 1801-TLs because the mid-woofers in the latter have a lower Fs and their TLs were designed to take advantage of that.  I don't remember the exact numbers from when I designed them, but IIRC the SongTowers have a modeled F3 in the low 40s and the HT1-TL modeled in mid-to low 30s.

Got it. But the two ST mid-woofers make it 4db more efficient....

Hi Music Lover,

I had the privilege of having a pair of Ellis 1801bs visiting a while back.  We listened to them alongside my HT3s, and I was VERY impressed.  Excellent imaging, and very natural sound.  I was surprised at how good the bass was.  When I saw Jim had designed a TL version, I thought that it's gotta be a winner--making a very good speaker even better.

I also own the dome-tweetered Songtowers, and listen in our small TV room.  I opted for those over the 1801bs because the Songtowers' smaller footprint works better in the very limited space.  They have surprisingly good bass extension--but I think you're right the Ellis would be better in that regard.  I didn't have the opportunity to compare the sound of the two in the same listening session.  But from directly comparing both the Songtowers and the 1801b to the HT3s, my impression is that the Ellis is significantly more "HT3-like," if that makes any sense.  It's hard to describe exactly.  I'd say they were more dynamic, with a greater sense of transparency maybe.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.  You might want to talk to Jim for a bit.  In any case, have fun!
