Is this a genuine retail Betales Mono box set?
« on: 31 Mar 2010, 01:32 am »
I'm posting this as an explicit question so that it could be seen in the topics listing and maybe answered by more people.

I started this discussion here

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=79021.0

but please use this thread to address the current question. For those who have genuine retail copies of the Mono set, are the CDs inserted into sleeves within each album slipcase? Mine came bare in the cardboard slipcases, but otherwise looked sealed in the those self-sealing bags that each album is in.

Also, did your set come with all the insert material shown in this pic?

Betales was a popular Mexican Beatles cover band that had some success back in the 80s, but they didn't record anything as far as I know.

There was Det Betales, a Norweigan Beatles tribute band formed in 1980.

Members:
Tor Olsen (John)
Magne Frydenlund (Paul)
Dag Svartskuren (George)
Rolf Øyvind Hæg (Ringo)

They did release several albums (including their promo CD, "Norweigan's Would"), but their domain, betales.com is up for sale, so the Norweigan lads must have gone onto other endeavors.

I assume you mean Beatles and there is a typo in the subject line. The CDs in my Beatles Mono box set came with the cardboard CD sleeve inside of a clear plastic protective cover that folds over and self-seals like British LPs. The CD is in an inner sleeve that is round on 3 sides and flat across the top, again like British Lps I own. Also inside are a replica of the LP inner sleve that has record care information on it plus any inserts that were in the original LP. The box set contains the first 10 British releases in mono plus the Mono Masters 1 & 2 which contain all the non-album British singles. It also contains a nice 44 page booklet describing the mono mixes with pictures and other interesting Beatles information.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Laura. Yes I did mean The Beatles. :slap: Your description does not match what I got. No inner sleeves with mine. Discs just sliding around in the cardboard covers. Pretty much confirms that what I got was a repack. Back to the vendor it goes.

There's a description of the packaging of the mono set in this review:

If you got it from eBay and it turns out to be not authentic, then you can use their fraud protection if the original ad claimed that it was the Capital Box set.

Hope the CDs sound as great as I've heard they do.

Roscoe,

IMO they sound terrific. Very close to the original mono LPs from Great Britain and much better than the original CDs from the 1980s.

Thanks Roscoe. I got it from a "trusted Amazon reseller". You know, the kind that show up when you click on the "also available New and Used From..." links on the Amazon pages. The seller listed it as New Retail. It looks authentic enough. Has the correct SKU code and everything. Just looks like a distributor repack. I suspect the seller doesn't even know what he's getting from his distributor.

I agree Laura.  I have a number of original Parlophone mono Beatles LPs and I think the mono CDs compare very favorably to them.

Ditto on my end. I'm sure I've got the real thing because it's a pre-release order of the original Mono run direct from Amazon.com
