Joe Bonamassa

I have some tickets to see Joe Bonamassa in a few weeks.  Any AC fans out there?  Sounds like it will be a great show on April 18.

Quote
Called “The New King of Blues" by Guitarist Magazine, Joe Bonamassa is widely renowned for his insanely fluid phrasing and post-modern fusion of electric blues, traditional Delta blues and rock ‘n’ roll. After starting his career touring with B.B. King, Bonamassa returns to The Grand after his 2008 sell-out performance in the baby grand with his electrifying stage presence and his new album, The Ballad of John Henry

:thumb: I think Amazon is going to be getting more of my money now. I'd not heard of this guy (been living in a cave lately) but from that video I'd say there's a definite David Gilmour influence....which is a good thing!

I got "live from nowhere..." for Christmas on some nice heavy vinyl and it's killer.  I would imagine the cd is good as well, but this is one of my favorite albums for content and sound.  It sounds BIG.   :guitar:

I wouldn't recommend "So it's Like That" from 2002.  Good playing, but not the best songs IMO.  However, it did come with a very entertaining dvd of Joe in concert and that may be worth having the forgettable cd.

I saw Joe last year in Charlotte and was blown away.  His DVD is tremendous and very well recorded.  New CD coming out soon.

Count me in as a fan of Joe B.  Also, the clip was a great choice.  I'm a bit tired of the same cliche blues licks and flashy guitar wankery you  get from too many players.  Joe's style is really unique and he pulls from so many different influences.  Don't get me wrong, he's understated at times but he can rock as well as anyone.  He and Derek Trucks are two of my favorite young blues players.

Thanks!

J

Saw Joe Bonamassa last night at the Grand in Wilmington, DE.  WOW, that dude can really play.  The joint was rockin'.  Reminded me a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughn - except Joe seems to play an even harder driven style of blues.

Highly recommended live show, this from a newbie "Joe fan".

Thanks, ya'll, for introducing this artist to me.  Sounds like he's from Texas even if he isn't.  May have to get his DVD.

According to his bio, Joe was born in Utica, NY. Here is a little more info:

"Born in Utica, NY on May 8, 1977 – the day that would have been blues icon Robert Johnson’s 66th birthday – the now L.A.-based Joe Bonamassa’s own musical experience began with playing guitar at age four on a short-scale Chiquita given to him by his father, a guitar dealer and player himself. By the time he was seven, he’d stepped up to a full-scale model and was uncannily mastering Stevie Ray Vaughan licks. At ten, he was gigging at venues in upstate New York, where he came to the legendary B.B. King’s attention. After initially hearing Bonamassa play, King – who personally asked Joe to open for his landmark 2005 80th birthday celebration tour – said, “This kid's potential is unbelievable. He hasn't even begun to scratch the surface. He's one of a kind.”

By the time he was twelve, Joe was touring with King, which led to opening slots for many other stars including Buddy Guy, Foreigner, George Thorogood, Robert Cray, Stephen Stills, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman. Storied producer Phil Ramone once said of him, “prodigies come few and far between. I saw him take an audience apart.” Bonamassa’s journeyman touring has built an audience of fans as legion and generation-spanning as his famed collaborators, and his live shows – over 150 a year – are breathtaking in their intensity. Beatles promoter Sam Leach compared the first time he saw Joe to his initial glimpse of the Fab Four at the Cavern Club – “I got that same feeling of excitement…Joe is the premiere Blues/Rock artist on the planet.”

He played last night to a standing room only crowd in Wilmington, DE.
