Drop Ceiling Diffuser Panels
« on: 28 Mar 2010, 06:28 am »
I need some acoustic treatment on my drop ceiling and I'd like to find some panels that can pop right in and provide a bit of diffusion.

I've seen some chinese makers of such products, but not able to find a good source from a reliable vendor (with a website in English).

Has anyone found what I'm talking about?

I worked at Auralex for many years and yes the T'Fusor from Auralex does drop right in the grid.  They can be painted.  Acoustically, if used in groupings of at least four and in a rotated pattern...they are a very smooth diffusor across the midrange.  There are others that drop in grids from RPG.

With diffusion, the placement and specific device should match the purpose.

Appreciate the replies.  I'm still a bit confused as to how diffusors actually work.  I'm using Gedlee Abbeys currently which are a constant directivity design.  I have the rear wall treated and the floor treated already.  Earl Geddes  does the same and also uses a diffusor on the ceiling to reflect the sound back towards the rear wall.  I would like to try attempting the same.  There's not much need to treat the side walls for these speakers.

Eventually, I'll probably put something on the wall behind my listening area.

In other words, I was just going to copy what Earl did to deal with the ceiling reflection.

Diffusion and how it works is a very complex topic.  I wrote an article for GIK Acoustics (I'm sure you can find it on their site) that talks about diffusion, types of and application with...

...Short answer is that diffusion takes the sound energy and spreads it evenly (hopefully) back into the space.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again for the reply, that much I do understand...I suppose any more than that I've just not read up enough on (mostly due to the price of most diffusion products I've come across).

Don't know if these apply, but as you have found out, good diffusion starts to get expensive. For my own audio/theater system I will be using the Realtraps diffusors for the rear side walls and back wall. I am considering them for the ceiling but I would like to conserve some $$$! There is also GIK's D1's which may be useful on ceilings and can be painted black.

Real Traps Diffusor (which also has an integrated bass absorber) $599 each

GIK Acoustics D1 -$99 each

Anand.

I haven't tried these but these seem to be the least expensive diffusors that I have found.  http://www.piaudiogroup.com/prod_acoustic.aspx

I make diffusers that mount in the ceiling grid.  Hilltop Studio here in Nashville has one I built.  It is 8 ft wide and is installed in the ceiling grid.  The main thing I need is how much depth you can accommodate above the ceiling surface.  This will determine the depth of the diffuser which affects the bandwidth of the diffuser (deeper is better).
