Big OB rig in Dallas LSAF (mid May)
« on: 28 Mar 2010, 03:10 am »
Hey guys.   Good to see everyone is having plenty of OB fun.  What a great way to go. :thumb:

So I thought you might like to see and even hear a nice big rig. I'll be playing it in my room at Lone Star Audio Fest in May.
Here is a photo of it (courtesy of Positive Feedback)

Not my rig, belongs to my buddy John. He will also be there with a big new OB design.
The top is an Altec 605 coax with a highly tweaked passive crossover.  The bottom is an 18" Eminence pro driver. A real whooper.  It will be driven actively with an Icepower class-d amp.

The magic happens in the mids, of course, and that's where the Altec coax really shines on OB. Vocals to die for.  And super clean of course.  The Altec will be driven by the very sweet Grant audio 300B SET amp.

300B SET on an Altec coax for highs and mids, with an 18" driven by tight class-d for bottom grunt.  Should be a match made in heaven.

I hope that some of you in Texas will be able to stop by over the weekend and drop in for a listen.  I think you'll be impressed.  Don't know what room I'll be in yet, but will post it when I know. Y'all come on by!

Here is a link to the show: http://www.lonestaraudiofest.com/
Dates are May 14, 15, 15 in Dallas, Texas.

Cool guys, come on by.  It's nothing serious, just for fun.  But we will have a good time and groove out on some good music.  Bring your CDs, we'll party!

These will be there.  They are an open baffle line array built by one of my students 3 years ago and further tweaked by Danny Richie.  Using very inexpensive drivers, they are excellent speakers.

Hey Dan.  Sorry no graphs.  These were tuned completely by ear.  There might have been a spot measure here and there, but nothing rigorous.  These are "trust your ears" speakers.  And the ears are very happy. =)

S Clark.  Cool!  I'll will certainly stop by for a listen.  Looking forward to it.

Man, I've got a soft spot for those old drivers.  Do you by chance know what year they were made?

Thanks again,

Dan

That's an OB near to my theoritizing heart, Michael.  Cross actively to WoofZilla down low. WooHoo!

What's the amp?  Looks like PP EL34s.

Best Aloha from da ol 'hood,

Hey Dan - I think they are mid '60s vintage. Alnico magnets.  I'll try to find out better for you.

Danny - yeah!  Looking forward to seeing you again and hearing your very cool stuff.  See you there.

Poinz - howzit, cuz?!  Da kine, yeah.  Killer Obees.  Better than my Maui rig for sure.
Good eye.  But of course you know your amps. =)  I believe it is indeed EL34-PP. Antique Sound Labs.   It will probably be at the show again, but on John's giganto OB rig.  3x18, 1x10 and a tweeter.  All passive.  I'll post pix.

Here are shots of Johns new rig under construction.
That's 2 18" woofers, a 10" mid and a dome tweeter.  All passive crossover.

Will be at LSAF this year, but looking a lot prettier. ;)

LSAF is looking to be a real hoot.  I really enjoyed last year, and was afraid it would just be the same stuff again this year.  It's lookin' like there's going to be lots of new Eye/Ear candy this year.  I'm gonna have to sit on my hands to keep from wavin' at everybody I'm so stoked.

Awesome indeed, Dan.   Altec drivers are true works of art.  It's no wonder they cost so much.

In fact, it's a wonder they don't cost more.

It looks like LSAF is going to be a real open baffle lollapalooza. :D

Hi, could you tell more about those crossovers. I'm located in Denmark and unfortunately can't drop by Dallas in May... I own a pair of 605B's, currently in storage due to relocating, but they should be out later this year. Had them in 3.5 by 4 feet open baffles for some time. Absolutely agree about the magic mids! (Though not sufficient bottom end in a smaller OB) I made a custom XO based on the N-1600 diagram, but with PIO caps, large air core inductors & carbon composite resistors. This worked fine, but I'm aware that within the XO design lies a great part of the success with these drivers. Thanks! Thomas

For sure, for sure.  Crossover is 1/2 the speaker.
I'll publish details as soon as I can.

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay. I got busy with a job loss situation. I'm probably going to need to postpone the build for a while. Your project looks promising. I'd be interested to hear what you think of bass output of a single 18 vs dual alpha 15s. Thanks
