Bryston and PMC's
« on: 28 Mar 2010, 01:10 am »
Hello,

Just traded out some Mcintosh gear for some Bryston 7BSST2's and they'll mate with my already existing PMC EB1i's. Do any of you have this combination? If so, with what preamp/processor and sources(s). The sound initially is very satisfying across the spectum, but particularly in the bass. The mid though is a bit reserved while the top end is needing to tame just a touch. I suspect the top end will settle in in the weeks ahead while the midrange will continue to open up further. Any PMC/Bryston owner care to compare or reassure as to my thinking? Thanks. Dave.

Hi canucks0,

Give circle member predrag a shout.  Make it a loud one as he lives in Croatia.  He has a pair of 7B2's and Eb1i's.  I think his 7's are early SN's and may not have the new transformer unless he has upgraded.

Maybe you can pair the 7B with a good tube preamp.  Anyway, just a thought for you.

Hello everybody,

Yes canucks0, I have just that combination.
As souce I have BCD1, iPod+Wadia 1701 and BP26 preamp.
The sound will likely open up a littlebit when you add some working hours to your gear.
I had in my system also MB2 which was clearly better in the middle but however less extended in bass. It´s a matter of taste.
The new tweeter in i series has slightly silkier sound than the old tweeter. Can´t say it is better, rather what you prefer.
My 7BSST2  are the original ones without new transformers and caps. I am happy enough with their sound.
I was promised a pair of 28B´s for a few days in my listening room. Will share my experience with you.  :eyebrows:

I have the MB- 1's with the 7Bsst2 (and BP-26) that now have the upgraded PS and caps.

Prior to the upgrade I had the same issue with the top end. I spent some time playing with cables to adjust the brightness and found that Canare balanced was just right (mogami too bright, musiflex way too softened) in my room which is too lively.

The amp upgrades had little effect on the top end in particular but the overall sound is more detailed, more palpable with deeper image and also more relaxed.

good luck taking things forward

I have the same as you. 7b-SSt2's and EB1i's

I use the Integra 9.8 as my preamp/processor. I do not have a CD player, but currently use the
Marantz blue ray BD8002 as my source. Blue Ray concerts like Dave MAthews, and John Mayer sound
 really, really good.

I have found certain speaker cables could make them very detailed but just a touch lean. Others tend to give it more bass and take down the tweeter a tiny bit. I find the mids in the Eb1i's really nice. Where I do notice the mids to be a little reserved is in my CB6i, that i use for a center speaker.

I am going to try some XLO Signature 3's. IC's and speaker wires, and see what changes.

By the way, I believe I am just a few miles away from you.

I should let you all know that I also have a BDA-1 and a BCD-1 coming in the next week. That will link into my McIntosh MX120 preamp/processor (Can't wait to get the SP3 into the system) and the other source will be my MS300 McIntosh music server tying into the BDA-1. Love that piece I must say. Cabling is all Acoustic Zen.
