Proper way to break in speaker?
« on: 27 Mar 2010, 05:59 pm »
I have a new center channel speaker on its way and want to make sure I start off correctly, is there a suggested way to break in a new speaker? I don't want to just plug it up and go if its detrimental to the new unit.
Thanks.

Nothing detrimental with plugging in a new speaker...unless it is playing something you don't like.   :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Just start using it and enjoy.

I realize not everyone will agree, but here's something else to consider.  I agree just plug it up and enjoy.

Three simple steps:
Plug your speakers
Play your speakers
Enjoy from day 1
See how you will get used to their sound in few days.

Just play them. Of course, for some, that's too simple. You can also hook them up out of phase facing 1 another w/ a blanket over them, & play them 24/7. That's the audiophile ritual. If you have a break-in CD, you get extra points.

Are there matching results proving an audible difference was heard, preferably under blind conditions?  Most of us should already know the drivers do break in a little, but that part is meaningless; any supposed change in sound is the true topic of debate.

I have done GOOD!!! The new speaker arrived safe, sounds great!! Energy CC-5 center channel, this thing has balls, first impressions are it totally fits with my JBL's sound. I can't believe how much sound comes out of this little 14" thing, makes my old center sound like a transistor radio.
Anyway, just thought I spout that off!!  :thumb: :thumb:

Here are some instructions from a manufacturer who believes break-in is required...

Not only does he believe in breakin, he has his own recipe. Extra points should be awarded.

Below is a great topic of discussion concerning break-in.  Personally, I am on the objective side of things: speaker drivers "break in," but no one has ever been able to prove that you can hear a difference, let alone that the difference is actually for the better.  YMMV, so please don't flame my opinion.

If you don't have the patience to wait for 20 hours before you exceed 1.5mm excursion, then this is a faster method, but not necessarily "proper".

Go to home depot, get a long extension cable - gauge doesn't matter. Cut off the female end (the end you plug things into) and divide the conductors back around 6 inches. Strip the insulation from the last inch and wrap these bare ends around you speaker posts. Set speaker on fireproof surface at a safe distance - this is where a long extension cord may be an advantage.

When all your friends have gathered and are comfortable, drinks in hand and cameras at the ready, plug the male end of the extension cord into a convenient outlet,
