Any plans for an active speaker kit?
« on: 27 Mar 2010, 01:58 pm »
Danny,

The thread about the N2X vs. Adam 7's got me thinking, any plans for an active speaker, like a small to medium sized active monitor that would fit nicely on my desk as computer speakers?

I am presently building a small sealed version  (.25 cuft) of the Neo 1's for a gentleman who he plans to use them as desk top monitors for his computer. They will not be powered, but they will be moderately efficient and should sound very nice coupled with a subwoofer. When they a finished pictures will be posted for others to see.

I think that's a great idea myself.  I have some long-term goals of developing my own speakers. (for selling, not just a project)  Near the top of my list is a high value active monitor that can cross-over between the home and studio markets.  Of course I don't currently have the capital to make it happen, but I think there's a market there.  I'd be targeting a slightly higher price point than that, as the market for <$1k powered monitors is pretty crowded.  Probably more of the $1200-$1600/pr. area.  I'm sure if he decided to Danny could come up with something great.  I know I'd want to work with him on it if I ever get there.

The market is crowded but it seems that almost all of the product is designed for studio monitoring as opposed to listening. I can think of less than a handful of speakers that are oriented to listening, i.e. Quad and Swans. There are a few powered speakers as well including AudioEngine and Aktimate, but they appear to have passive crossovers.

(I should have titled the thread, Any plans for a speaker kit with an active crossover)

I don't think the climb would be worth the view.

I have no doubt that Danny can and probably has done it but supporting it via DIY would be a nightmare.

At the end what does all the added complexity give you over a standard kit?  It's not like the current offerings have hard to drive impedance swings?

For that kind of money you could build a Neo1 with a Peachtree audio product and be sitting pretty for desktp life!  Heck you could even add one of Dannys entry subs under the desk.

No offense just a different view.

Kind Regards
Robert

Fair question. It comes down to a whether or not one believes there may be inherent advantages in an active crossover vs a passive crossover. If the answer is no there should be not interest in making such a product.

If there are benefits to an active crossover design then there is a market opportunity. However to maximize the benefit to Danny and customers, a slightly different approach might be required. That might perhaps mean that active crossovers and electronics boards should come pre-built and pre-tested. This would greatly reduce the complexity of assembly.

Or perhaps starting with a pre-existing studio monitor (KRK, Mackie, Alesis, etc) and supplying a modification kit for it to make it more appropriate for audiophile use.
