Is a 3D television in my future?
« on: 23 Mar 2010, 03:58 am »
Should anyone wait to buy a large flat panel TV until 3D televisions come out?

I am planning on getting a 60-65" TV this year, and I have to consider the 3D technology...but I have no idea whether it will be more than just a fad or niche market. I have yet to see a 3D movie in the theaters.

From what i understand, special TVs are required for 3D, but not Blu-Ray  players?

At this point I am inclined to ignore 3D, but would love to have your input.

Somewhat of a personal question.  If you have not seen a 3D movie yet maybe you should ask yourself if you even enjoy the type of movie that will most likely be available in 3D.  My personal answer to that question is probably not.  I fully expect movie studios to go totally overboard with special effects to the point that they become tiresome and gratuitous and then even more tiresome and gratuitous.

Before everyone jumps all over me for the following please note the source.  I am just relating what I was told at the Panasonic 3D demo at T.H.E. Show in January.  The young rep was very enthusiastic and told me:

1.  3D TVs will be surprisingly priced--not that much more than regular TVs
2.  No media battle this time--Blue Ray is the winner
3.  There is a surprising amount of content that is being worked on by the studios.

My take on point 3 is the studios hope (desperately need)  to have another winner and don't want to be caught short or late to the party.

Again, I make no claim for the accuracy of the above or my faith in them.  But they are interesting discussion points.

I have Coraline in BD 3D and watched it with my kids on our run of the mill 42" 1080p plasma. The 3D effect is there but the problem isn't so much a matter of the set's monitor capabilities but to me, rather one of size. Since we are all used to 3D on the big screen, we're really used to having a lot going on in our peripheral vision. This in turn enhances the feeling of depth on screen.

I think 3D in the home requires similar scale to what we have in theaters to be worth it. Given such a scenario, I'm more keen on a good but not wallet busting front projector and screen combo which is comparably priced to the really big flat screens on the market. I'd then keep a budget plasma, lcd or led set for non HD TV viewing  wall mounted behind the drop or pop up screen.

If I understand how 3-D works, it won't work for me due to the fact that my left eye is blind. If that's true, I am certain I won't buy one.

I do not think 3D is for me either. My eyes are not normal and I cannot take advantage of current 3D. But, they will have glassesless displays available as soon as next year and I guess I will just have to see how it works. :)
