N2X vs ADAM A7's
« on: 22 Mar 2010, 07:32 pm »
I've asked this before, but never got an answer.   Does anyone know the difference between the two?  Will be using it with either a 15" or 18" sub, in a small home studio.  Right now the room i willl have them in is pretty small,  like 8'W x 12'L x 7'H.

So am I getting this right, you are trying to compare a powered professional studio monitor to the GR Research N2X (a 2 way mini monitor that does not have its own power amp)? One is priced at $1K, while the other is a kit with a price of $329?

I haven't listened to either but I am not sure if these 2 speakers can really be compared given the different price points and different markets. You would have to build an N2X and purchase the Adam A7, make sure the overall SPL outputs were very much the same and then compare. Even then, small differences in SPL can make the 'shooting' contest quite difficult as the Adam has its own integrated power amplifier.

Good luck.

Anand.

I've heard both, and it's a tough call.  I like the Adam A7 quite a bit for the money.  I'd say the N2X has the overall edge in sound quality, but won't go as low. (really needs a sub imho)  Frankly though, I'm not a fan of mixing on anything that won't at least go down to 40hz BEFORE any rolloff, as that's where a lot of kick drums live.  There are a ton of project studios mixing bass heavy mixes because their monitors are insufficient.  I would think about some way to get down into the mid 30's at least, and that frequently means integrating a sub.

Also, the N2X is likely going to cost more once you build the cabinets and add a decent amplifier.  If you already have a decent amp, then it's a closer comparison if not an even playing field.

Hi Elves:

I responded to your original post back in Sept. 09. Here is what I posted.

"While I have not heard the N2X I pretty much would know how they would sound since I know the drivers used. I heard the Adams briefly in a pro audio shop.

My estimation would be:

-I liked the Adams. I brought in some music I recorded and they sounded extremely close to what the source was. Very detailed all throughout. Mids sounded very clean, almost aluminum woofer like. I did wonder what long term life would be with them as they are so much about detail. Would they get wearisome after a while?

Yet, if I were buying a pro monitor, the Adams would be on the top of the list, along with Event Opals, K and H 0300, and Barefoots. But these are way more pricey than the Adam A7s.

-N2X uses the exceptional BG Neo tweeter, which is much like the Adam tweeter in sound. Very detailed, open, fast, and non fatiguing. The 165 woofer I suspect would be very close in sound to the 130 woofs I have. They are fast and detailed, yet with some warmth. I suspect, and this is a guess, that the 165 would be fuller in sound than the Adams lean and mean sound.

Conclusion: both are great picks, as they will let you see into the music. The N2X may be more forgiving in the mids than the Adams, yet still very detailed. I like them both.

To hear what music I used to audition the Adams go to:

The album is the 11th one down and is called "Thorns on His Head". Hey, and I even give the song away for free."

But DON'T go to the "End Time Events" page on our site. At least not with out wearing a seat belt.
