Replacing cartridge headshell leads
« on: 22 Mar 2010, 12:42 am »
I need to replace the headshell leads in my SME IV.Vi tonearm. Does anyone know if the Cardas headshell leads will fit my tonearm and cartridge (Lyra Skala)? Will the SME leads that are designed for the Series V tonearm also fit the IV.Vi? This is the first time I have had to replace the leads.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Laura,
I'm pretty sure that they're standard leads, but I'm not positive. I was looking on Audiogon and came across these:

You can check, but I think SME has only 1 size.

Thanks neobop. I talked to Acoustic Sounds last week and they said the SME leads will fit any SME tonearm so I ordered a set and just finished installing them. A perfect fit.

So, noise gone?

The noise level is substantially diminished and does not interfere with listening. I believe the remaining noise may be tube related (it does not sound like a ground loop or noise from a ground problem). I checked all of the grounds, lifted grounds, etc. and the only difference was that the noise was different and worse whenever I lifted a ground on the TT, pre amp, power conditioner or amp.It is present only when I turn the volume knob past 12 o'clock. The tubes in my pre amp are due to be replaced so I am going to give that a try.
