Any Joy Division fans?

Joy Division has been one of my favorite bands for as long as I can remember.  Here is a live clip, check out how young Bernard Sumner was on the guitar.  His haunting guitar work with Joy Division was perfect for this type of music.  I love this clip but hate the part late about 3 minutes in where Bono (WTF?) breaks in to give an opinion.

Ceremony is my favorite JD song and one of my favorite songs from any band (Love Will Tear Us Apart is also one of my favorites).  Ian Curtis (RIP) had a very unique vocal style and there is no live video of this song with Ian on vocals (there are several with Bernard when they became New Order).  I was a big fan of New Order back in the day and over the years really came to appreciate the strange artistry of Ian Curtis and the short but brilliant era of Joy Division.

Jack,
Have you seen the film, 24 Hour Party People?
Though it is a fictionalized account of the music scene that Joy Division/New Order came out of, I found it quite interesting.

I think my appreciation of this band came after his suicide, and the remaining members forming New Order.

Yep.

I am more of a new order fan but I have my joy division days too.

I have both Joy Division (2007) and Control (2007) DVDs, while glossy versions of reality, they are fairly well done to me.

For all JD / NO fans, be sure to watch "Control".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421082/

I saw it a few weeks ago and it is absolutely stunning.  The storyline as well as the black and white cinematagraphy really portray the bleakness.  More than just the story of Joy Division, it tells of Ian Curtis' journey into darkness, paranoia, illness, depression, and ultimately suicide.

I found it haunting and mersmerizing.  It is based on his wife's memoir and directed by the band's photographer from the early days, so I gotta believe it's a fairly accurate portrayal.

The actor that played Ian Curtis did an amazing job in capturing his brooding personna and spasmodic stage movements.  At times I thought I was watching the real person.  Quite convincing.

Highly recommended!     :thumb:

I'm a big fan of New Order.  I was fortunate to grow up in the Bay Area where we have many concert venues.  I have seen New Order live more than any other band, 6 times.  The last show I attended they opened for the Chemical Brothers at Henry J Kaiser in Oakland.  Classic!

Count me in. I grew up with Joy Division and New Order. I also followed band member's side projects as The Other Two & You and Electronic.

Love Bauhaus too.

Sorry to go off topic but yes Bauhaus definitely rocks. Peter Murphy came out with a couple of great solo albums afterwards that I consider at least at par with his old band.

I'm a fan as well.  I love playing Ceremony and Love Will Tear Us Apart on guitar.

I think newer bands like Interpol and The Editors have been influenced by them.  They're worth checking out if you haven't heard them.

Ending the night listening to this various artist tribute album to JD.....
A Means To An End: The Music Of Joy Division (1995) easy to find used.

I appreciate it for what it is: reinterpretations and tributes. Some cool versions ( I like Transmission)

yeah, I'm a fan.  I really love the JD song Atmosphere.  Sounds great on a good stereo.   I was at a concert awhile back and I was kind taken by suprise when the band (The Church from Australia, a great band themselves) worked in some of the music and lyrics from Atmosphere with one of their songs.  Very cool.

Huge Joy Division fan here!

My favorite video/ live performance of all time here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKe-lq8VZFo

I loved 24 Hour Party People even though many said events were exagerated (of course). My wife and I recently watched Control - we both were disappointed in the movie. Genius writer Ian may have been but, he was portrayed as being a lousy human being. Not trying to be judgemental but, the movie was not our cup of tea.

Minor JD fan but major NO fan here.

Saw NO in Bay Area back in... '91?  Sugar Cubes and PIL opened.

It was written by his wife.  Maybe that's the way he really was?   :dunno:

He was a brooding and restless person, a tortured soul and most certainly afflicted by mental illness.  His actions were driven by all of this.  The entire project was the result of those close to him, so more than likely it is accurate.   He was a human being with frailities and faults and I much prefer this sort of portrayal (if accurate) to a sanitized Hollywood version that engages in lame hero worship.  He was a musician with problems, not a saint.

I, for one, much prefer JD to NO.  NO was a bit too poppy, where JD was more unique.  My opinion only.

I really only have the JD best of, but I enjoy it.

I agree with you Josh but its difficult to compare JD didn't last as long as NO.  I was looking around Amazon for remastered JD albums.  Any suggestions?

I just reminded myself that the first CD I ever bought was New Order's Technique.  At the time, I only buy LPs and was resisting to buy CDs since they cost a heck of a lot more.  But, Technique wasn't available on LP.  So, I think this was back in '89 when I bought my first CD.

I trekked to Amoeba records a few months ago to buy a few records.  Found a brand new Technique LP remastered/reissue.  Bought it.  I guess I've came full circle.

Funny part is the LP costs 3 times more than what LPs cost back in '89 and twice as much as CDs do now.

I love Joy Division. One of my favorite tracks is "Isolation", especially all the different live versions they did.

I like a lot of the New Order catalog as well, but much prefer their older stuff compared to the newer stuff they have put out recently. "Crystal" is one of the more stand-out tracks from their past few albums.
