N2X vs. Event ASP8/Mackie HR824mkii etc...
« on: 19 Mar 2010, 07:19 pm »
Please help.... really need some good speakers!!  i play experimental electronic/acid jazz with many simultaneous intricate syncopated rhythms overlayed with lush melodies and gnarly filters growling! i stay as analog as is possible, the synths and drum machines are all analog. so i need some babies that can handle excruciating mids with little coherance interupted by alternating high and low frequencies.  in other words.. what would be the least muddy?  of course,  i will include a sub. i have an NHT 1259 for now, and will soon be upgrading that also.  any help is well needed.   i'm leaning towards the N2X ( with the upgrades too),  but if there isn't much difference b/t those and like the mid priced Mackies/Event's/KRK/ maybe JBL,,  please feel free to chime in......

Are these being used for monitor purposes for composing music for a home studio, or for music reproduction?  It looks like for home studio purposes.  Will help folks understand the need.

You should get in on the Neo 2x or Neo 1x demo, depending on where you live. Nothing like actually listening to the speakers in your home/studio.

If you want accurate bass you can't go wrong with the servo subs.

I'm sure if you build any of Danny's speakers you will be happy with the results. :thumb:

I've heard all of those, and the N2X is the clear winner.  It's flat though, not forward in the midsection.  The other two will go lower, but at the expense of some trade-offs.  With the Event, this means some boxyness and a little port noise.  The Mackie is smoother down low, but doesn't maintain great control if you crank it.  Both have some minor resonance issues (the N2X would too if you don't use NoRez) and I would give the Neo 3 tweeter the edge over both.  The only downside for the N2X is just that it doesn't dig very deep, so it doesn't stand alone without a sub that well.  Add a servo sub and they'll be VERY good.  The only monitors I've heard that I like better were much larger and much more expensive. (like 5 times more even after the enclosures and all upgrades)

You might want to check out the "Any ideas for anarchy thread" for deeper playing monitor or get a sub.  Either of Dannys subs would be good and with the new amp he has something for everyones budget.
