Speaker positioning - how to run your Omegas?
« on: 16 Mar 2010, 07:31 pm »
I'm just wondering how other Omega owners here have their speakers set up in terms of distance apart, toe in, distance from front and side walls, etc to get the very best sound. I'm sure placement preferences will vary due to listening room differences as well as different models (monitors vs. the XRS).

I recently moved into a new place in NYC where the living/listening room has far from ideal acoustics (read TERRIBLE). The room is nearly square 15.5Wx16.5Lx10H with a front wall only 12ft wide ending in an open 3.5W hallway opening on the right side. To make matters worse, the right sidewall is a sunken in designer kitchen, so zero way to treat that wall acoustically. After many hours of moving and listening I ended up with the best sound by having my Super 8 XRS 7.5ft apart center to center, 3" of toe in (15"/12" from front wall measured from the back corners of the speaker). Sidewall clearance is rather tight still unfortunately - only 24" on the left speaker and much more on the right speaker - 4ft. So a big compromise to get decent sound in my living room due to the lopsided nature of the kitchen/hallway on the right side of the room. I found that having my XRS toed in a bit more than in my old apartment helped the sound significantly overall (Im guessing less sidewall interplay) at the expense of only a slight reduction in soundstage. Pulling the speakers 3" further out than I had run them previously also helped, with no real loss in bass impact. Anyway, I was very surprised to hear how relatively minor changes in speaker position made a DRAMATIC difference in how they sound.

Have you tried near field setup with speakers and listening position in perfect triangle configuration?

 Toe-in is necessary.

To reduce the interference of the soundwaves and geometry of your listening space, try moving speakers (and listening position) away from the walls.

Cheers

P.S
Omegas sound great near field ...... from my experiance. YMMV

My old living room had a nearfield setup and the XRS worked exceptionally well like that. Unfortunately my current living room doesnt allow for nearfield listening.  :(

My room was not ideal, but I was able to add room treatments (which sounds like  a problem for you), and move my chair to a near-field for listening -- then back where "it belongs" for life. I'm closer to the fronts of the speakers than they are apart. And from my line of sight, I see some of the inside walls of both speakers, so focal intersection is behind my listening position. Nearfield does a lot to help overcome room challenges.

GIK has released number of designer option traps that look like furniture, etc. And a great place for room / set up advice is the Acoustic Forum here on AC. If you can, draw your room in a graphics package or sketch and scan, then post specifics to the forum. Both GIK and Real Traps representatives are very helpful, not to mention help from other AC members. Help goes beyond traps, they help with speaker placement too.

My 3i are setup near field, but not a perfect triangle. They are on bookcases and the ports are rather close to the back of the bookcase. Louis said I wouldn't lose a lot or cause any problems with the 4.5" driver and I have the deep hemp anyway.

I haven't tried toe-in yet as they sound big but I plan on playing around this weekend.

Hi BossaNova31,

Call me and we will go over it. A picture would be great.

All rooms are different and experiment experiment experiment.
In my room I have 8 to 10 feet apart. About 3 feet feet from back wall and slight toe in. Sometimes I like to have extreme toe in. Depends on my mood.

With subs I like to push the mains out a bit.

Near field with 6's I like especially.

Thanks,
Louis

Hi Louis,

Hope you're well. You mentioned the 6's work well nearfield.

I have small room. 3.3 meters x 3 meters. Solid wall in front (3.3m), in back (3.3m), and on the left side (3m). All walls are solid concrete. Right side is open (3m but no wall) into a larger space.

Speakers must be very close to back wall, ~6 inches.
5-6 feet apart on the longer back wall. Drivers will be 6-7 feet from listening position.

Question: Super 6 Monitor, Super 6 XRS, Super 5 Monitor, Super 5 XRS? Which would likely work best in this room?

Auditioning is not possible.

I'd go with an xrs model if the speakers are going to be that close to the back wall because they are bottom ported.

I own a pair of both super six monitors and super 6 xrs.

Hi lw,

Thanks, I have space constraint, maybe not enough room for XRS and my other gear. I was having the same thought as you though, bottom port would be better. Still considering...  :)
