Crossovers-Need basic info if possible.
« on: 13 Mar 2010, 02:10 am »
Can someone explain crossovers to me. I think that they are circuits that divide up an audio signal and send it to its respective driver-either a low freq. or higher freq...hence the name crossover. Am I close?? The reason I ask is that my Sony STR-DH800 a/v receiver has an option to change or set crossover freqs. I know its not the same as a speaker crossover,  at least I think that. I'm getting kinda muddy low end and I want to try and tweak crossover info if its possible or even an option that I can understand.  :|
 Thank you in advance!

If you're referring to an HT receiver you are probably referring to the subwoofer crossover settings. So if you have a subwoofer hooked up, the different crossover settings determine at what frequency you want to, well, cross the sound over from your main speakers to the sub. For smaller monitor-type speakers usually ~120hz, for larger main speakers ~60-80hz. This is just a guideline.

I'm getting kinda muddy low end and I want to try and tweak crossover info if its possible or even an option that I can understand.

The Sony's Speaker Menu is where you define the number of speakers you have, the type (Large or Small), the crossover frequency and the speaker distance.  Speakers set to Large will be sent a full-range signal, and speakers set to Small will be sent frequencies from 40Hz - 200Hz and up while the subwoofer will be sent frequencies from 40Hz - 200Hz and down, depending on the crossover frequency setting you choose.  The front, center and surround speakers each have their own setting.  I believe the default is 120Hz, which is probably too high for your front main JBL E-80.

If you are using the Bose 201 speakers (sitting on top of your front speakers in your photo) simultaneously with your front speakers, that may be contributing to your "muddy low end", as well as providing unwanted acoustical interaction.

And if you are, they would have to be connected either in series or parallel, either of which would present a sub-optimal speaker load to the amplifier.  Most budget receivers do not do well with 4 ohm loads (if they are connected in parallel) or produce enough power with 16 ohm loads (if they are connected in series).  My advice is to disconnect them.

Also, having the front speakers too close to wall boundaries can increase bass output, sometimes resulting in the sound being muddy or boomy.  If you can't move them out further from the wall, you could try experimenting with pluging the ports.  If port plugs were not supplied, "stuff a sock in it".

With an AV Surround Receiver there are many settings that need to be optimized, so I would recommend becoming familiar with the setup as outlined in the owner's manual.  If you don't have yours, here is a link to one.

Good luck!

Thanks Steve. I run the JBL's and Bose as front spkrs A & B so I'll
turn off each and compare. I've been using the auto calibration mic
at my listening pos. and saving the "full flat" reading/sound as a baseline.
The manual is quite detailed and I've been studying it since I purchased
it. Will spend this rainy day here moving stuff around working toward a
better room configuration first.
When I remove the Bose I then have option to bi-amp the JBL's- that is
something else I can try. Room configuration first and foremost today. Thanks
for your help.

Hey Steve... I disconnected the Bose L&R fronts as you suggested after listening to both sets and comparing. The JBL's match up pretty good with the JBL L20T's I'm using as surrounds. My thought was that 2 sets of speakers for the fronts would bring added dimension to the sound stage but I was wrong. I ended up making adjustments/compenstations for one set that ended up being detrimental to the others sound. Lessoned learned..thanks.
I also draped a comforter over my HDTV and stacked a bunched of pillows back in the corner just to see if I could hear a difference-WOW!
What a huge difference, brought out a much fuller and rounded bass sound. Also brought to the forefront my Bose center channels sound, its very thin, no definition. I'm gonna sell the 201's and VCS10 and put any funds toward a JBL center that matches up with my E80's to round out the setup with all like speaker timbre's. Will also bi-amp the fronts (todays plan)...your idea was GREAT!! Thanks!! Ed. :thumb:
