dbx encoded vinyl
« on: 12 Mar 2010, 04:39 am »
I retrieved my old Teac RtR from the garage yesterday, blew out the dust, lubed everything that moved, cleaned out the pots... and I'll be damned, it worked.  Dug out a box of tapes, and ran across some that I had encoded decades ago.  So after a bit of digging, I found the old dbx 128 expander/encoder.  Of course this required finding my old Sansui pre that had a tape monitor loop.  So after another hour of making a mess on the wife's dining room table, the sound of Thelma Houston and the Pressure Cooker once again reverberated through the house.

But then I dug for the original lp.  Set up a JVC QL-6 and let her spin.  :o I knew that 30 years ago, that the sound of direct to disc and dbx encoded records was about as good as it got, but surprisingly all these years later the sound of direct to disc and dbx encoded records is about as good as it gets.  I got out the rest of my encoded disc and spent several hours listening.  These are still excellent audiophile recording.  Is there anyone else out there in AC land that still has a dbx set up?  What are your experiences with it?

I still have maybe 15 discs and a couple of various dbx decoders/expanders.  My vinyl system has been down for quite awhile, but in another 6 weeks or so it'll be singing.  I certainly plan to dust off the dbx discs.

Anybody else?

I borrowed a dBx in college, a trial from Stereo Sound (I believe) on Rte 347 in Long Island. There was a guy Elliot there who later was in a Manhattan store…but I digress.

The best thing to listen to at the time was Thick As A Brick, because of the dynamic nature of that recording. Otherwise, for straight forward rock and roll there wasn't much difference to my ears (as I recall).

Anyway, I dragged everyone into my dorm room to listen to the hookup, with and without the dBx. Granted, these were not specifically encoded disks, just regular records that were expanded. I asked everyone if they could hear the difference, and eventually returned the unit.

For a couple of college years afterward, people listening to the stereo would nod their heads knowingly and mockingly say "I hear the difference." Never lived that experiment down!

Cool. Can you give us a few of the titles? I just don't see any in the used shops, maybe I'm not looking for the little symbol??

So, looks like mainly jazz and classical titles. No wonder I haven't seen them!
Nice to know I might have one less box to buy!

That Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances conducted by Donald Johanos is an all time great lp.  You are in for a treat.
