Changing tubes on PS 36.5
« on: 11 Mar 2010, 04:34 pm »
since its a power supply and not a pre or amp, does upgrading the tube set on the PS yield any sonic benefits?

Regulators - No.
Rectifiers - Oh yea!

You're confused here...you asked specifically about the PS (power supply).  The 6H30 tubes are not in the PS.  We responded by saying that, in the PS, there are two types of tubes...the voltage regulators (not a tube rolling candidate) and the rectifiers (tube rolling heaven).  The 6H30 signal tubes are in the preamp itself, and are also great tube rolling candidates.  There are many posts about it.

from Modwright Website:

"Six tubes are used in the PS 36.5: (2) 6H30 triodes for signal gain and buffering, (2) 6EA7/6EM7 triodes for voltage regulation and (2) 5AR4 (and equivalent, including 5U4) for rectification, making this power supply a true dual mono design."

btw, how long do the rectifiers and signal tubes in the PS last compared to the same tubes used in the LS?
Should the life expectancy be the same?

The LS (linestage) portion holds the signal tubes.  Always has, always will.  The power supply (PS) is connected via an umbilical and holds the voltage tubes and the rectifiers.  The signal tubes will last the same whether you have a one box or two.

does the PS Chasis ideally need to be far away in distance from the LS Chasis or no difference?

thanks, thinking of picking up a PS.

The standard umbilical is only about 1 or 2M length.  I have the LS just above the PS in my rack.
