Win7 Update killed my Squeezebox
« on: 10 Mar 2010, 03:07 pm »
Title says it all, Win 7 Home Prem. 64 bit updated itself this a.m. and now my SB does not work...shows steady blue light..apparently see's the network.
Steps Taken:
1)Restored Windows to before update-nada!
2)Reinstalled Squeezebox Server-nada!
3)Reset and reconfigured Duet receiver..via PERL just as I did to set it up originally 4 times-nada!
4)My IP address has changed since the Win7 update (don't know why it seems strange) and I used new address when trying to config receiver through PERL-nada!
5)Rebooted Network-nada!
6)Logitech won't support because I don't have the controller-tried that anyway-zip!
7)Disabled all Anti-Virus and Firewalls in the very beginning, thought that was the issue..nope.

Any ideas, thoughts, currently glowing blue led designates it sees the network, server is running but won't see receiver even though receiver reports it see's network.
 Thanks in advance..Ed L.

The Win7 update changed my IP address, so I updated router firmware, retried PERL configuration a couple more times and it finally works again. Beware of Win 7 update that became live today.....proceed with caution.

Vista 64bit update also cutoff my Duet from my WHS server, and the server from my PC. But a "diagnose" of my network card and a reset of the network card fixed the problem.

Did you have a static IP address set on your PC?

I thought I did have static IP.  Will check, turning off auto
updates for sure, took way too long to fix..real pain in the
ass.

Did you have a static IP address set on your PC?

In over 20 years of working with IP and networking, I have never seen an OS or update change a static IP address.

DHCP is used for convenience and managing large networks.  The IP address of your cable/DSL modem and WAN side of your router obtained from your ISP (for home networks) will almost always be DHCP assigned, although in some cases, a static IP address can be supplied for a fee.

However, on the LAN side, you can choose whether to have your router automatically assign IP addresses through DHCP or not.  I prefer static IP addresses.  They don't change, and if you need to troubleshoot connections through the use of the IP Ping command, you can be confident of the correct IP address.

DHCP can be useful to hand out addresses to visiting wireless laptops, and many router DHCP server programs can be used in a Static DHCP mode, which can allow the DHCP to always assign the same IP address to designated computers or devices based on their MAC hardware addresses.

On the subject of Windows Automatic Updates, I suppose for those who know next to nothing about computers, that is probably the best way to insure that important updates are applied.  But for everyone else with even just a bare minimum of computer savvy, I recommend to configure Windows Update to "Download updates, but let me choose whether to install them".

There was a Windows Update for my integrated Realtek Gigabit Network Adapter, that rendered my network adapter unable to connect (Of course, it didn't change the IP address because I was using a static IP address, and I was able to simple roll back the driver to the previous version).  Inspecting the available updates before installing allows you to ignore updates like these, as well as superfluous ones like the 34 language packs, Help files for those that don't have a persistent Internet connection, etc. that you don't need.

You can also choose to hide (or restore) any selected uninstalled updates from view to simplify things.

A good way to do this is allow your router to automatically assign addresses above a certain range (that is, 192.168.1.20+) and under that range have the router assign specific addresses based on the MAC address of the device (which my router shows).  This way, all your normal gear is assigned a fixed address, but you can still have people over who have their own gear and they can use your system.
