Unparallel Wall, help on decision needed
« on: 9 Mar 2010, 01:43 pm »
Hi,

I need an advice from you acoustic pro´s, my sleeping room wich i decided to convert into a stereo listening room aswell has a unparallel wall on one of the slight larger sides.

Here a quick Paint drawing ( my Paint skill is quite low though  ) and some data :

Wall A = 13,9 ft / B = 12,7 ft / C = 14 ft / D = 11,8 ft

Wall B has a Window wich starts at 3 ft and ends about 0,5 ft under the ceiling. The Ceiling height is overall 8,2 ft

I just need ideas how to approach the Speaker and listening position placement, rather place my rig in front of the unparallel wall A or in front of the Window Wall B.

I like a wide and deep soundstage so i thought that there is no other choice than sitting close to a backwall and pulling Speakers at least 3 ft into the room if not more. DIY Basstraps or Basotect ones and panels to reduce early reflections will be aquired, aswell as Courtains for the window of thicker cloth like Molton etc.

There is a 6,5 x 3 ft Bed and one or two cloth based armoires of 3,5 x 1.8 ft each wich have to fit into the room. Two Ikea billiy filled with books are availaible to place them where they make sense, or not.

My Speakers are a bit on the analytical side, its a mix of Swans M1 and Sonics Arkadia sonically and they are D appolito design.

Here some links to the Imagination Two Speakers :

Thx in advance  for any idea :)

I'd definitely face Wall B at the top. Then add corner bass traps plus absorbers at the side wall and ceiling reflection points.

Actually, you'll get a much wider and clearer soundstage if you're closer to the speakers. More here:

Allright, thanks Ethan. Then i´ll approach it this way  :thumb:

Thanks, i already knew your site, even in Germany where i live Hifi people follow your reconmendations and of course your video guides

Here a update based on the 38% formula as far as i got it :

Orange = 2 x Billy bookshelfes filled with Books, schould work as low budget 2d diffusor or ?

Yellow = Bed, velour sourfaced body

Blue = Armoires of cloth surface http://www.amazon.de/JUMBO-Kleiderschrank-Faltschrank-Stoffschrank-118x165x50cm/dp/B002TUIOL6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1268255359&sr=8-1

Let me breathe through the surface so i think that they can work as absorber / slight diffusor and fullfill they need in 2 ways. One of them has to be placed anyway somewhere in the room ;)

Green Stars = My Areca Palm Plants, the ones in the back reach nearly 2m of height. The ones in the Front ca. 1m.

The whole floor is carpet covered, not very thick but i thought in purchasing a thicker flokati like one to place it between the speakers.

Does the live end ( diffusion ) will work this way with the twoe billy´s and the areca palms in the back ? Or should i puchase / diy a kind of skyline absorbers to fix them on those billy bookshelfes ?

As absorbers for the corners i thought in purchasing some Homatherm Holzflex of 18cm thickness and place them in room height into each free corner. Or should i buy the basotect cornerblocks ? The rest of stuff availiable here in germany is very expensive, there are a lot of professional companies selling accoustic stuff here but unfortunately no realtraps, in uk neither afaik :(

One point i read on your page is that the tweeters have to bel placed at earheight, a common reconmendation. My speakers play better if their tweeters are placed about 10cm over earlevel. Even the developer of the speakers reconmends higher placement. How does this affect the ceiling reflection points or any other circumstance in the way the room is set up on the pic ?

Again much thx in advance :)
