It's a Dodd and it's 8W.  I'm sure it's over $100.

OK here are some details .. I guess I just ASSumed some of you would have remembered one of Gary Dodd's first amps.  It had no model name, was just an 8w per channel stereo amp and is NOT one of the new battery powered amps.

To quote Mr. Dodd:

"The Dodd Audio A8 amp is a dual mono stereo amp, all triode, Class A, no feedback, self-biasing tube amp giving 8 watts of clean power. It is hand made in Garland, Texas with point to point wiring and a removable power cord. The innovative design uses 5687/7044 output tubes and 6SN7 driver tubes."

Review on Audio Asylum here:

http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/amp/messages/2749.html

and, no I did not write the review.

I had read somewhere at some point that Dannie Richie preferred this amp to any 300B amps he had heard at the time ... maybe he will chime in.

I listed it as an interest check in this forum because it is not an offical "for sale" forum.  Thought maybe someone here would like a shot at it before a sale ad was posted.

Thanks

Jeff

I did that review almost 8 years ago. :icon_lol:

These are good tube amps and are best matched with speakers with at least 92db sensitivity.  I have the last version of this amp which are monoblocks with 7044 tubes.  I have them driving a Raw Accoustics RA8 at home theater reference levels.  Don't let its size fool you, given the right speakers it can certainly play louder than 8 watts.

As a matter of fact, I just got the new Dodd Audio hybrid monos which are rated about 125w @8, 250w @4 but the 8 watt amp seem to play louder at lower volumes.  I was so concerned about it that I called Gary of Dodd Audio to do some explaining on why my 8 watt amp sounds louder than the new hybrid monos.  Imagine that! :eyebrows:

Own a piece of Dodd Audio history.  I believe this was the first amp that GR Research sold commercially for Dodd Audio.

BTW, is your amp similar to the one in my Avatar?

thanks for chiming in ddemeterio5

yes, the amp pictured in your avatar looks like the amp I have ... VERY heavy iron for an 8w amp and dead quiet thru 96db speakers ... no idea about speakers like Avantgarde's at 105 to 110db though

very much like the Dodd but I am currently using 87db speakers and the 8w/ch is just not enough ...

thanks again

Pez ... this is the first IC or interest check ad I have ever posted ... I see them frequently here and on all other audio forums I have participated in so I am not sure why u find it so strange or hilarious ... in any event, more details have been written and I will take pics soon.

thx

and this is a letter I had rec'd from Gary Dodd awhile back:

The 8 watt amps are push-pull Class A amps using a very small amount of feedback to keep them in control at lower frequencies.

The usable bandwidth is from 14hz-55khz @1db. The tubes are 5687's or some variation of that. You can use 7044's which are my personal favorites; 7119's and E182CC's will also work well in these amps. Changing tube types will change the sound of the amps, so you can virtually tune them to sound the way you like.  The amps are self- bias or cathode bias, so there is nothing to do except install the tubes and listen.

They use all Cardas terminations with detachable power cords. The amps are physically small (8"x 12"). They are reliable and stable giving long life out of a set of tubes, and the tubes are easy to get and inexpensive. The transformers are designed by myself and built locally as I can oversee the processes. The transformers are massive for 8 watt transformers, they are the same physical size as the transformers on the 50 watt amps!
If you have more questions feel free to let me know.

Thanks

Gary Dodd
