Rack gear - build your own rack?
« on: 5 Mar 2010, 05:33 pm »
I have recently invested in an old pro audio amp for my sub.

I suspect I will invest again, for an amp for my OB subs.

For those using pro audio gear, do any of you rack mount?  Having looked online, no way I will spring for a new one, has anyone just gone ahead and built a worthy sized enclosure out of wood?

Any issues with that idea?

All the pro amps seem to be fan cooled, so I assume as long as the fans have a space to pull in air, I will be OK?

Eventually, I could see building something near the furnace, behind a finished wall, but at present the entire basement is open.

Yes, the fans need some space to get air and prevent from overheating your amp. There are many factors to consider when building your own rack, please check:

Check out Metro shelves. I assembled 2 racks from their offerings. Both have 5" casters. You can order it w/o casters. One rack w/ 4 shelves has >245 lbs. of gear. They're extremely sturdy, albeit w/ a low WAF factor.
Do a search because there are a lot of cos. offering the same shelving. Cost should be $200-$300. Mark Levinson used this type rack in a Youtube video. Try a search for homework. Good Luck.

If building your own rack, you still need good ventilation.  If not, the fans will just circulate all that hot air.

Just went to IKEA tonight - there is a lot of potential convert-your-own shelving and cabinetry potential there. Some of it is pressboard with cheap vinyl veneer, but there is some decent stuff, such as heavier MDF with bonded veneer, and even some natural wood stuff. Just an idea. Both of these are $70! You can cut out holes in the back.
