For me, there are two bands that have orders of magnitude more music in my collection than everybody else:

Phish - 375 albums
Grateful Dead - 249 albums

After those two,my next three are:

Miles Davis - 89
The Beatles - 82
Dave Matthews Band - 48

For all of the above, I am not counting my record collection which is boxed up and in storage.

Good Morning George,

Holy crap!  Those numbers are mind-boggling to me.  Are there 375 different Phish albums?  Same question as to GD.  How many bootlegs?

I have:
Genesis - 29 vinyl + 1 CD
Pink Floyd - 12 vinyl + 1 CD
Miles Davis - 10 vinyl

In the classical genre:
10 interpretations of  Saint-Saëns 3rd Symphony w/ pipe organ
8 interpretations of Ravel's Bolero

This was a cursory scan so I'm sure I missed a few.  For perspective, my library has over 3500 vinyl and just over 200 CDs.  I do consider myself a music lover and buy a lot of music out of curiosity but the internet has changed the number of keepers vs throw-aways.  However, I am a self-confessed gear-aholic too.

Those numbers for Phish, Grateful Dead, and Dave Matthews Band include live shows (some of which were officially released, some which are sound boards, and some which are audience recordings).

And believe it or not, I listen to almost all of the shows at some point over the course of a year (either at home, in the office, or on my iPod).

Amazing.  The most CDs of one artist I have is Johnny Cash, and I have about 20 CDs of his.

whoa! that's a lot of phish! unreal. what a fan! amazing to see some of these lists, esp. those that have bands i've never heard of. Steeleye Span!?! i'll have to look them up. i tend to delve into the catalogs of artists i like after making a news discovery... maybe this will lead to another buying blitz. keep them coming, folks...

One of my wife's good friends used to work at Sony Music in some sort of artist relations capacity.  Hence, she always had access to huge quantities of CDs to distribute for free - purely for promotional purposes.  And she was always anxious to use her resources to pad out our collection.  Unfortunately, she only had access to discs from artists with whom she worked directly.  So we could have had a complete catalogue of Lionel Ritchie's work, or loads of Andrea Bocelli - basically artists we weren't interested in at all.  The only exception was John Cougar/Cougar-Mellencamp/Mellencamp or whatever he wants to be called these days.  Neither of us listens to his stuff very much, yet I think we now have more JCM than Miles Davis or John Coltrane or Mark Knopfler (three staples in my collection).

I would recommend that you consider the 3 CD boxed set Frank Sinatra - The Capitol Years



This is a nice survey of Sinatra's best music, recorded in the 1950s and early 1960s.  Most of his work with the brilliant Nelson Riddle comes from this period as well.  Sinatra also made a lot of great records for his own label Reprise, but I would suggest the Capitol material as a great starting point.

I don't have numbers to hand, but i probably have most of the albums either on CD or vinyl (but not all) by the following artists:

Pat Metheny
Genesis (all up to ABACAB)
Porcupine Tree
Kevin Gilbert (half are boots)

At least these are the ones that fill a slot or spillover in my racks.

Hehe...I have 293 shows taking up 240 Gigs of HD space.  That doesn't even count the hundreds of shows I haven't tagged yet.

That's a good question, original poster.  I never managed to consolidate my collection into one place, like these ripping madmen and their multi-terrabyte hard drives.  I envy their ability for accurate digital analysis and statistics.  On vinyl I suspect it would have to be Jethro Tull.  On CD, perhaps Candlemass.  On ill-gotten digital, The Melvins  (well you know, I just had to test to see what these torrent things did)  Other high-density bands would be Dead Can Dance, Kreator and Death In June.

A band that can hold one's interest over the long haul is pretty rare.  There's not a whole lot of bands who have an entire catalog that is worth owning.  It's just not possible to make a high volume of music without some useless crap in there.  I am grateful that the completist bug has not bitten me, freeing me to waste money on other bands.

Another Deadhead here. Easily more Grateful Dead (& solo) material than anything else. Bob Dylan and Duke Ellington are probably tied for 2nd and 3rd. I'm in the same boat w/ nathanm: I've got stuff spread across Hard Drive(s), SACD, DVD-A, DVD, and CD, so, I couldn't give an exact count.

The Dead wind up in the first slot for me, because of how much musical ground they cover: Blues, Country, Jazz, Rock, and secondary combinations thereof. There is also what I'll call the Bach Aspect that I find engaging: I may have 30 or 40 different live versions of He's Gone or Tennessee Jed, but there are subtle (and sometimes major) differences between every performance. I used to collect versions of JS Bach's Goldberg Variations for similar reasons: Every performer brought something different to their recorded performance, and I think Bach's composition style allowed for more of the performer to come through. Sorry, starting to wander here...

Another reason the Dead top my list is the band's groundbreaking work in studio and concert sound reinforcement, etc, giving me an additional level to appreciate.

I have CD's by both artists but this Mayall I would love to find on LP
