So, does anyone have a clue why it's been recalled?

Because even with all the extra's it was still to boring for the microcircuits in the dvd-writers to get excited enough to place the bits just right

Maybe they want to put a big picture of Johnny Depp's face on the cover proudly proclaiming:  "Starring Best Actor Nominee from Pirates of the Carribean"

I like the movie quite a bit.  One of Tim Burton's best films IMO.  Probably the best cast film in the last ten years.

Everywhere I checked no one had a clue why Disney pulled the DVD. All BVHE has said so far is that's it's been "Postphoned indefinitely".

They've been pressed. And some have even been shipped. It was supposed to be available for sale on 2/3.

Why would you go to the trouble of pressing the discs & shipping them, only to recall them very last minute?

A few guesses... and since no one knows..

1 Someone put some secret thing in the menu that was too x-rated for it to go out... or something in the video was x-rated that those crazy guys at Disney love to do..

2 It worked on region 1 AND region 2 players.. oh no! profits will be lost! or some other profit-hindering situation...

3 There was a major misspelling in the menu's and/or cover art... or it was rated improperly.

As for #1, that's probably a good guess. Something in the content that shouldn't be there for whatever reason.

#2, I don't think so. Region 2 got Ed Wood on 10/14/02, and it's still available there. Region 4 got it some time ago as well.

#3, I don't know about any menu typo's as I've not opened the copy I was able to accquire. But I see nothing wrong with the cover art, and it's rated properly on the back cover.

On the back it does list Burton as directing Big Fish, Depp being in Pirates, Murray being in Lost In Translation. But it mentions nothing of this year's Golden Globes, or Oscars.

I just got my copy from Amazon yesterday. I plan on watching it over the weekend - I'll let you know if I see anything strange. Actually, with this movie how would I know?

I don't think it'd be something in the movie.

It's probably something in the extras or the commentary.

I've not opened my copy (actually I've already sold it), so I won't know from personal experience.

All Disney has said so far was that they "want to release it on a better date". Sounds like a complete load of crap if you ask me. There's gotta be some content on it that's not "Disney friendly", or something they didn't have the rights to put on the disc...

I watched it last night and can only rule out the "defective" theory. I think the most likely reason is copyright trouble. I can think of two areas in the bonus material where they might have screwed up: they showed a few still pictures from "Bride of the Monster" , and they have a mini-documentary on cross-dressers where they show the cover to "Girltalk" (I could not make that up) magazine.

I only found one Easter Egg - it is a hidden deleted scene with nothing shocking in it.

The other viable theory I suppose Disney could have wimped out about the documentary itself. It is hardly graphic but it looks at transvestites with a sympathetic tone. Given how far right this country has swung they may be afraid the bible thumpers will object. That would be ironic as hell given that Plan 9 was financed by a church hoping to fund religious films.

Who knows. I plan on keeping mine. I get a very guilty pleasure from all things Ed Wood.

It's been mentioned that this might be one problem Disney had w/releasing it.

Quote
From the Main Menu, go to Bonus Material.

Highlight the Right Arrow at the bottom of the screen and press Enter to
go to the second page.

Select "Deleted Scenes."

Highlight "Que Sera Sera."

Press the right arrow key on your remote twice and the lightning bolt on
the upper right side of the screen will light up.

Press enter to watch the Easter Egg.

Watch it and tell me what you think of it. And if it looks like something worthy of recalling a release as late as they did...

Yeah, that's the hidden deleted scene I found before. It is Bela and Wood talking about what their next picture should be after Glen or Glenda. Bela is lamenting that he always plays the bad guy - he used to play Romeo in Hungary and wants to do a romantic part again. Wood hatches the "Dr. Acula" idea to launch Bela's comeback. Bela makes a comment about "those bastards at Universal. I made so much money for them ... Those sons of bitches control the rights (to Dracula)". I can't imagine anyone could sue over that.

There are 4 movie posters on the wall: Ciizen Kane, Dracula and The Death Kiss, and a partially hidden Freaks poster. Copyright trouble with them?

It's a shame the release got so screwed up. I love this movie.

Is there a site anywhere that lists where the Easter Eggs are?  I would never find this stuff on my own.

The Ed Wood one was easy to find. With a PC DVD software player, you can usually find them just by moving the mouse around over the menus. Sometimes they are a lot trickier.
