Bryston Upgrade Question (new to forum, hello all)
« on: 26 Feb 2010, 11:16 am »
Hello everyone, I've just discovered this forum.

I currently own a Bryston BP6 and a Bryston 2bsst squared.  My speakers are hard to drive Dynaudio Contours S1.4s (4ohms and 85db effeciency).  The Bryston gear is terrific, but I think my speakers might sound even better with more power.  I'm looking for opinions regarding whether I shoud upgrade to the 4bsst squared.

Also, is the 4bsst2 simply the exact same amp with more watts OR is the design and component quality better also?

I can afford to buy new today, but I'm not so loaded I can just waste this kind of money.  It's a serious purchase for me.

Any comments at all are greatly appreciated.  Thanks.   :)

hello! welcome!

i for one don't think there are "hard to drive" speakers. they just might not be as efficient as other ones. no big deal, just turn the volume up a bit.

more power usually increases the ease of driving the speaker units. a smart car and a hummer (rip...) are both cars, but i'd rather be in the hummer when it comes to power and safety. the downside: it is marginally more expensive :P

i am fairly positive that if you ask nicely you can take a 4b sst2 home so you can give it a test drive. once you are convinced you can bring the money to the store... :D

Welcome Jaxwired

I was running my Dynaudio 1.3MKIIs for a few years with a 3BST and found they opened up a lot with the 4BSST, even at lower volumes.
Depending at what level you listen to, you'll appreciate the extra reserve when it comes to dynamic music.
Currently I'm running the Dynaudio Special 25's which are an easier load, but would not return to a lower powered amp.
Think of it this way, two people lifting a 10lb dumbbell, one's a weight lifter the other your average joe, both have no problem lifting the weight, but who's going to lift it longer and easier without strain.

Rob,

Thanks for the input.  BTW, gorgeous speakers you have there.  Love the finish you picked.  I'm tempted myself by those specials, but I love my Contours so much...

Thanks,

I've also just installed new drivers all round in my 1.3MKII, and recovered the grills, total make over.
Your S1.4 are very good though.
Also getting back to my analogy, imagine the dumb bell just changed from 10lbs to 100lbs for a few seconds, that's dynamic reserve.

Just FYI,

Rumour has it that the Special 25s are to be re-issued.

"Special 25 Maser Birch re-issue!
How bout' some exciting news for all of the Special 25 fans out there? Apparently due to many, many requests from dealers and consumers world wide, Dynaudio has decided to re-issue the original Special 25 in the original Maser Birch veneer. These Special 25's will be hand signed by the owner of Dynaudio and will retain the exact same crossover, drivers, etc... The availability of the Maser Birch veneer has made this possible but on a much more limited scale than the original first year production. How is that for a Monday?"

They'll be priced a little lower than the C1s at about $6000.00US.

But which at any level your at, Dynaudio and Bryston work extremely well together

Welcome Jaxwired, I agree that a home trial of a 4BSST2 is the best way to tell if there is an audible difference with your S1.4s, and that Bryston Dynaudio is a great combination.  When I got my Confidence 5s (which some claim are very difficult to drive) I had a 4BST and then upgraded to PP300 SST monoblocks, but not because the 4BST was lacking in the ability to adequately drive the C5s, I just wanted the flexibility to mount the PP300s to the back of my AV cabinet. Either way, the 4BST or PP300s have never seemed strained in any way.

Cheers,    Al

jax, if you can, keep the 2b and get the 4b. Then bi-amp your speakers!

Btw, I run the BP6 and a 4BSST. Great combo!

Thanks for the advice vegas.  Unfortunately, only 1 set of posts on all Dynaudios...

Well, in that case, get the 4B. You'll have a more powerful, more effortless sound, imo.
