Heard the Whispers at RMAF 2009. 600W into 4 ohms and they sounded great, close your eyes and you were at the symphony.

Do you have a big room?

Hi VOLKS,

Just for the record those are the $45K Helix in the picture.  The Whisper can be had for less than half that price.  The Focus HD is a really great value in a speaker IMHO.  Back when they first came out as the Focus 20/20 they got consistently great reviews by a variety of reviewers using a variety of amps.  I have not heard them with Bryston gear but can't imagine they wouldn't sound great with a 4B or higher.  They are very efficient and don't dip too low on the impedence curve so are easy to match with amps.

They remind me of my Infinity 9 Kappas as far as driver compliment goes.  The Infinitys have a pair of 12" woofers too.  It's hard to find that in a speaker selling for 10K or less anymore.  Make sure you have a big room for the Focus HD especially if paired with a 4B or bigger.  From a sound as well as a physical perspective they would overwhelm a smaller room.  Gotta give those big woofs room to move air!

It's a lot of speaker for the money! I'd like to hear them, but I can't afford them, so I'm just teasing myself, really.

Wow - the Helix speaker aesthetic's are very "steampunkish" and would really look awesome in my room

Be well...

I always wanted to hear them.  Unfortunately, they don't have many dealers or places to audition them.  It makes it tough when you can't hear the speakers and can't hear them with a variety of electronics.

so... why not build them yourself? only advantages there... you can combine units, create a cabinet perfect to your liking in any finish you desire, fine tune the filter to perfection and make it as expensive as you desire! one thing is for sure, you will end up with loudspeakers which will be cheaper but better sounding, matching perfectly with your wallpaper/couch/doorposts/etc., and which you will be proud of.

True. However, in my case, I don't have the know-how, the space, or the tools to do that!

You can search the used market and usually come up with a pair of the focus. I have not had the opportunity to try the Bryston with my Classics but have found that the Classic loves power. I am using a four channel Coda made for legacy amp for separate channel to each speaker connection and am quite satisfied. This speaker has kept up with every change I have made in my system. Don't let the snobs tell you they are HT only cause with the right equipment, the Focus are great.

Those Legacy speakers do love power,I have a Counterpoint 100 watts solid state,Legacy Studios,i think they are the type of speaker that just craves power, the more the better.
