New lifestyle speaker system proposal
« on: 24 Feb 2010, 04:58 pm »
Like myself, more people keep their audio assets on computers and ipods
and spend an increasing amount of time in front of their computer, even
watching stereo TV[1] on their computer.

This near-field challenge is different than what audiophiles expect from
their high end suppliers. Things like folded ribbon transformers or wave
guides are required in the tighter space constraints of this directional
near-field world. Powered studio monitors are the closest product
category I've found for this market.

NuForce is one of the few high end audio companys that has recognized
this trend and has a product line directed toward me and this growing
market. The icon + s1 + w1 is an outstanding package and close to what
I'm currently using.

Other products that fit are:

But there is always room for improvement. This post is an open request to
NuForce or anyone to create a computer 2.1 system.

The down firing sub should go behind the computer display with a minimum footprint
but tall to accommodate space for a large power supply, amps and usb input.

I'm hoping for a miracle on the satellites. I love the s1's waveguide but
understand some feel they are too large. Folded ribbons are expensive.
Perhaps a stack of three s1 speaker elements would provide a narrow,
tall (get to ear level) ability to move more air. They should be passive
to keep them narrow, but one should have a volume knob and the other a
headphone output. (cat5e cable between satellites and sub?)

Priced around $999

Please, someone, make me happy.

[1] Games and movies require a 5.1 setup. The above could be modified
with a TOS input and an AC3 decoder, but I'm not sure the added cost
in MSRP and tech support would be worth it.
