Do you have this problem?

I need your help again
. My kids just wont listen to Jazz/classical music.
But not all is lost here; I do have them enjoying some Esteban guitar that they do not ask me to change. So, I am looking for several high-quality
CD
recordings of jazz piano/snare type combos (or like) of familiar popular music. Similar to what you would hear played in the Nordstrom’s department store (They seem to like that). NO Vocals, Diana Krall is not their cup of tea
. Any proposals?

Norah Jones seems to be pretty (mainstream) popular at the moment.

Try to get them their own system in their own space that they can listen to their own music on when they don't like yours.
Each of my kids has a system in their room except my daughter and she can use the system in the billiards room. All the kids get systems in their bedrooms when they turn 10 (wifes rule).
Give them an APPRECIATION for music and let them know what you like.
Please keep an open mind for what they like too. You may be pleasantly surprised at some of it.
Also, their tastes will change as they grow older, as your taste probably have.
Good luck.

Marbles,
I couldn't agree with you more.
It brings me great joy to see my 2 1/2 year old son dancing around the room to my music.
I play everything from Grateful Dead to Frank Sinatra to Beethoven to Miles Davis to Wilco (his favorite is Greatful Dead). He already has a little mini system in his room and he won't go to sleep without me turing on some bedtimes tunes.
As for tastes changing as you get older...that is so true. I listen to things now that I wouldn't have dreamed of 10 years ago (and vice-versa). Anybody want a well maintained Heavy Metal Collection?

Yes, the more you try to force a genre of music on them the more they will resist. Most kids don't have the musical language or maturity to appreciate fairly complex music. Hence they tend to listen to relatively simple, straightforward music (like pop/rock/rap). As they grow older and start to get bored with that genre's relative simpleness, their appreciation for the more complex musical structures will increase and they will be ready for jazz and classical.
Just the fact that YOU like classical and jazz will have a big influence on them later, when they are ready for it.

Nora Jones, duh
I should of thought of this. Thanks Ferdi!
Marbles, your right.
The kids do have and use small "Boom Boxes". With
my
systems next few upgrades I should have enough left overs to put decent systems in their rooms
Don't get me wrong, the kids get to listen to their music and I enjoy "some" of it. As you said my tastes have and continue to change especialy along with upgrades in my system.
I never thought I would listen Diana Krall
or Esteban. But as my system improves I keep trying new add new dimensions to my music and would like to bring the kids along if possible. I have found that if the kids recognize the tune,as with the Esteban guitar solos they (and actually myself too) enjoy the music more.
Zybar; I concure! Both my wife and myself are amazed at how our three year old loves to listen and dance at his age. Who'ed of thought?
Tyson,
" KIDS, YAS VILL LISTIN AND LISTIN LONGH!"
. I agree with your point and never would I force a style of music. I'm attempting a more subliminal approach reacting to what I have observed. They actually stopped in the mall and asked to listen to the "LIVE" piano performance. My wish here is to locate some of the type of music in which they seem open to.

You could always try some of the more "exciting" classical, like Beethoven's 9th symphony, 5th symphony, and 3rd symphony, or Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto and Symphonies 4, 5, and 6. Or Brahms Symphony # 1 or #3 and his Piano Concero #1 and #2 or his Violin Concerto. For a bit lighter fare, there is always Mozart's last 5 symphonies and his last 10 piano Concertos, or Vivaldi's concertos (violin, cello, oboe, doesn't matter, they are all very good).

Marbles advice is excellent, you should give kids their own space to listen to whatever they want. I watched both of my kids (16 and 14) go through the various pop star of the day stuff. I try not to comment too much as to my likes or dislikes of the music they listen to. Life's to short to get into a pissing contest over musical preferences with my kids.
If I hear them listening to something that sounds like a band or genre that I like I might hand them a cd to try. An example is my son was listening to a Coheed & Cambria cd so I loaned him some Dream Theater, Pocupine Tree and Dave Mathews. Dave Mathews Band is now his current favorite band and he's learning DMB songs on his guitar. My daughter, on the other hand, loves Clay Aiken and NSync but she also loves Bach violin concertos because she plays violin. It took a while, but I think I've gotten over bring disappointed when my kids don't like the music that I do.
Even better then listening to music, get them interested in playing an instrument. That is truly a gift they can enjoy for a lifetime.

Whaddaya got, Zybar? I'm an unrepentant metal head! I love classical, rock, folk, etc but I've never quit loving my 80's heavy metal.

Classics all!
I'm not a huge fan of Megadeth, but I have a couple of their albums. Most likely, though, I have all the rest. I bought the entire
Judas Priest
catalog again a couple years back when they remastered 'em all (except they didn't do the first 2 Gull ones, including
Rocka Rolla
). Ditto the recent
Maiden
and
Slayer
reissues.
In my case, I think my returning to my metal roots is somewhat a reaction to the near-universal crappiness of almost all of todays rock & pop music (there are some notable exceptions, of course, but not much mainstream interests me there).

Rob,
That's one reason why I listen to less and less rock/pop and more jazz, alt country, and classical.

Speaking of Megadeath, I just picked up a Chris Poland cd Return to Metropolis 2002. It's a remastered edition with a couple of additional songs added to the early 90's release. Very tasty album, IMO. If you like mid 70's Jeff Beck you'll probably enjoy this one.
