Speaker pops and clicks on 14B SST
« on: 23 Feb 2010, 02:12 pm »
Hmm ... just noticed small speaker clicks/pops on power on and power off. Sometimes louder, sometimes softer.

I'm running unbalanced inputs.

Tried leaving source powered on, then powered amplifier on/off with a small click on power on, and small click on power off.

With source powered off, I get louder pops on power on, and power off.

Switched to balanced inputs (with nothing connected), then powered amplifier on/off with pops on power on, and power off.

Is this normal behaviour?

Yes there are relays and depending on the system you may hear small clicks on power up and down.

I'm not referring to the noise of the relays. I can distinguish those pretty clearly as emanating from within the amplifier chassis itself.

The clicks/pops I'm speaking of come through the speakers themselves on power on/off.

Is that normal?

Yes it is normal as the relays open and close. It is not always present as sometimes the efficiency of the speaker or the system grounding can affect it.

Hi quietdragon,

It's completely normal, not to worry.  I hear a soft, uniform click coming out of the speakers during every shutdown.  Same with the amps that the 7B SST2's replaced.  With the old amps it was not a nice neat tidy click but a buzzing sound that diminished in frequency until all the energy from the amp was discharged.  I much prefer the "Bryston Click"!  In fact, James, you should list it as a feature in on the website.

I have the same thing on my 4B-SST2.  It is more of a "snap" that a "pop" when powering down.  My other 6 Bryston amps turn on/off without any noises.  Mike Pickett and I exchanged emails over the course of a couple of weeks and my amp spec'd out with no issues in terms of bias and d/c offset.  He told me that if it bothered me I could send it in and they would take a look, but at this point it is of little concern and is at a level that is not considered to be damaging to the speaker drivers.

I had a PP250 that was really bad when turned off and ultimately went into thermal runaway and blew all 5 drivers in my center channel.  Bryston took care of the amp which ended up being a problem with the balanced input board, and completely replaced the assembly.  Their customer service is beyond reproach.

An old subject surfacing up again.

There are 3 14B's in triamp mode, using balanced XLR 3Y cables from the BP26 the 3 amps.
Each amp is connected to the bass, mid and treble of the PMC MB2/XBD.

When powering off, only the amp connected to the mid gives out an audible pop, the other two does not.

Is it normal in this setting? (one out of three ain't bad...)

I've been upgrading and in the process have been plugging and unplugging the system and components.
This has never happened before, well, at least the pop was not so audible before.

Thanks

I have a 5bst and the slight bit of noise is not unusual when powering up or shutting down.

Thanks audit13.

However, my system has 3 Bryston amps and only one behaves differently from the other two.
The very audible pop only happens to only that amps that is connected to the Midrange drivers of the speakers.

If all three drivers of the speakers that is connected to each amp pops, click or boom at the same level when powering off, I am OK with that. All components are plugged from a AC outlet, so that eliminates the power source.

As I had mentioned, I have been plugging and unplugging components, sometimes it is better to leave things alone when everything is working fine...but this is never an ideal state as things often change.

Hi KCLam
I can't help you, with your question, sorry, but I have a question myself regarding your system setup.
You say you use three amps with the BP-25. I also have a BP-20 that is basically The same pre, minus the remote control.Same inputs, outputs.
Are you using custom triple Y balanced interconnects from the xlr out of your bp-25?
I did something similar but utilized both rca outputs plus xlr.
Are there any drawbacks using the xlr only and leave the RCA inactive. If it's a better approach I like to know and try it myself. Where did you get the cables from?
Thanks
George

Hi George,

I have not tried your approach of connecting the pre to the three amps, a combo of XLR and RCA. I have not used the method of both XLR and RCA, I had the triple Y XLR since I bought these amps,

They were custom made, the dear friend of mine who made this cable has since passed away. I plan to upgrade this XLR cable and will have someone make a pair for me.
