IEC power cord
« on: 23 Feb 2010, 03:02 am »

Well I got my 4be back from service today.  Also a few days before last weekend a pair of 7b's showed up as well.  Im up to 6 Brystons now...One more to go.   I buy my amps second hand... So I'm wondering what size IEC cord comes with Brystons?  Im assuming 14g.  The ones sent with the 7bs are fairly small.  I figured id make or buy all new power cables and wanted to make sure i got the correct gauge.  Also id like to get something with a stiffer plug where it plugs in the back of the amp.  I have them mounted in a tall glass rack and the weight of the cable pulling down makes it look as though they are trying to pull out.

Another unrelated question.  On the last 4be I picked up,  the writing on the face plate is cracking and missing.  Is there anyway to have that fixed as I quite enjoy the look of the big round bold 80's lettering scrypt of them.  Im planning to send the amp in for service. Its filthy on the inside and one of the balanced inputs is not working.

:D I had no intention of having so many.  I bought 3 4be's then i came across a killer deal on another 4be and then the 7bs.  So one more and ill have seven.  The Stand is just large enough to hold em all with a little space in between.

Hi carolinacat,

The power cable is 14G as you say.  Contact Mike Pickett at Bryston regarding the faceplate - it may have to be rescreened so I am not sure if that means re -anodizing as well?

Mr James,

Thanks for the reply,  I will email him today.

I have a question on the older 7bs. serial numbers 770181 and I believe 770184.  (age please).   I am currently using them in a 4ohm load in series.  But I could take the drivers out of my cabinets and rewire them to 1ohm and use the parallel on the amp.
I read an older post in regards to series/parallel, where you said  "So you can see it is a balancing act as to which is the better option given a specific speaker load."
Im using them to power 4 15" sealed subs, one 7b amp for 2 subs.  Which wiring method would be better in my circumstance?

Hi

The Series mode is better at 4 ohms and above --- the parallel mode at 4 ohms and below.
In series you get huge 'voltage' swing and reasonable 'current' ... with the parallel mode you get huge 'current' swing and 'reasonable' voltage.
