I feel like a new parent...
« on: 23 Feb 2010, 01:27 am »
I finished up my sub this weekend.  Many thanks to those here for their advice before and during the process.  It was a challenge for me, but very rewarding.

I have to admit the finishing process had me very frustrated.  When I was working on it in my garage with the sun shining in, I could see every little flaw.  I finally accepted that this was my first project, and it wasn't going to be perfect.  Turns out that after it was done and under indoor lighting, I was happy with the way it looked.  Still, I might give veneer a shot on the next project.  How does that compare in difficultly to painting?

Anyway, pictures speak louder than words.  Here's a few shots of the build process:

I used the PVA iron on method for my AV-1RS, which my first DIY speaker. I will definitely be doing more veneering. It was a pleasant process and obviously didn't come out perfect but I was happy with the result.
Your sub looks great.  :thumb:

It sounds great!  This is the first quality sub I've owned, or even listened to.  So, I can't offer any comparisons to the usual suspects.  But, wow!  I'm amazed at what this thing can do.  It really has changed my audio experience.

Its funny to me that the only criticism I ever read about this sub is its relative lack of output.  Again, I don't have much to compare it to, but I can't imagine adding more output.  I'm sure it could be done, but I'd be concerned about structural damage to my house. :D  I watched Kung Fu Panda and Monsters Inc with my 5 year old son, and the whole house was shaking.  He kept saying "Dad, I could feel that".  My wife just shook her head and mumbled something about annoying the neighbors.

I do need to find a way to tone it down a little at night time without messing up the Audyssey settings.  I tried out their Dynamic Volume feature, but it didn't really help much.
