Are these monster RCA Radiotron tubes useful?
« on: 22 Feb 2010, 10:15 pm »
These two tubes have been in an attic for 20 years and look new though nobody in Tucson has a big enough tube tester to check them out, can anyone use them?

There is only one of each: a Radiotron 869B and a Radiotron 4-250A 5D22

Spectacular tubes! Thanks for posting the pics.

250W mono push pull amp perhaps?

the 869 seems to be a half wave mercury rectifier.

According to the Duncan Amps Tube Datasheet Locator the 869B is a mercury vapor half-wave rectifier (careful not to break it!) that can handle 10 - 20K inverse volts, will pass up to 20 amps, and emits x-rays when pushed hard.  :o The 5D22 is a power tetrode that is capable of outputting 750 Watts with 3000 volts DC applied to the plate.  :o :o

Beautiful as it is, the 869 might not make such a good bedside lamp after all

Thanks guys. The tubes belong to a friend who wants to sell them. Any offers?

The 869 rectifier would be the ultimate Cornet2 tweak.
tubesforever are you listening?

I think the 4-250a is used in HAM radios.  Maybe posting on a HAM board would be more beneficial?

I did build a SET using Eimac 250 which has same physical look , long long time ago.

Hi Unison, can you tell us more about your 250 amp?

What you would like to know about it?

OK I'll go first!

1.  All the iron looks to be from on mfr, who (or whom)?
2.  What are the three silvery cans between the OPT and power xfrmrs that look like funny shaped cans of spam?
3.  What are the two smaller dealies that look suspiciously like trannies but I think are chokes sitting there right behind the dual rectifier tubes?
4.  What is the tube compliment?
5.  If it isn't IP property, schematic? Preferably with values, please!

Oh and nice cabinetry too!  Mahogany top and Tiger Maple sides?

Thank you!

Thanks Jake.

To add to that:

1 what is the B+
2 what is the driver complement
3 is the PS choke input or Cap input
4 are you using interstage or cap coupled
5 How does it sound with those tubes?

1.  All the iron looks to be from on mfr, who (or whom)?
Tamura from Japan, along with Tango, they are the best and only what I would used now, I have wasted lot of times and $ trying others. Japanese transformers are true to their spec, can't beat them sound wise.
2.  What are the three silvery cans between the OPT and power xfrmrs that look like funny shaped cans of spam?
They are oil caps 1500V 15uF.
3.  What are the two smaller dealies that look suspiciously like trannies but I think
are chokes sitting there right behind the dual rectifier tubes?
Tamura chokes, 10H 200ma each. I used double choke. There are 4 rectifiers, the big ones are for power tubes, the small one are for input/driver.
4.  What is the tube compliment?
     12AY7 input KT66 driver.
5.  If it isn't IP property, schematic? Preferably with values, please!
This was built long time ago, around 95, schematic was never drawn, it was in my head back then.

Oh and nice cabinetry too!  Mahogany top and Tiger Maple sides?
Top is Aluminum anodized in gold, wood chassis is Birdeye Maple.

1 what is the B+
     920V
2 what is the driver complement
   12AY7 input KT66 driver.
3 is the PS choke input or Cap input
   15uF/1500V cap input
4 are you using interstage or cap coupled
Interstages are under the chassis, the rest are all Tamuras.
5 How does it sound with those tubes?
I would used this amp for the mid/hi in an active system. I prefer 845 from lower to mid/lo. From mid up they are very clear and detailed with great resolution, and not a hint of edginess, even when using them on horn system which what I used now to drive the Altec horns.
