1940's music: Wanted!
« on: 21 Feb 2010, 01:22 am »
I wish I had more 1940's music!  :D

I'd like it either played by modern bands or the vintage recordings. It's difficult to come by because it seems all store CD's have the same songs on them. AKA: The Charleston.

Are there any good collections out there? CD's and Cassettes are fine.

By the 40's do you mean White big bands like Artie Shaw,Harry James,Benny Goodman.....Black Big bands like Count Basie,Duke Ellington,Jimmie Lunceford........vocalists like Billie Holiday,Frank Sinatra,Dick Haymes.....Jump Blues like Louis Jordan,Big Joe Turner,T-Bone Walker....Western Swing like Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys,Spade cooley,Hank Penny. There was an amazing amount of music recorded 'tween 1940 and 1950,not to mention the Petrillo recording ban and the end of WW2 and the shellac shortage during the war,and the post war independent label boom. Before the mid 1940's it seemed most music was recorded by a handful of labels-after the war the music expanded and exploded via new independent labels. Most big bands were on their last legs in the 40's due to no gas,no tires for the band bus, some survived and hung in there, some dissolved....the big band era was really the 1930's into about 1941.As they say "narrow your search" and i, (we) can offer you some good tips on getting you the music you want!

You know, this album made it to #1 in the British charts last year.  It doesn't get much more 1940s than Vera Lynn!

Here are a few that I recommend:

Duke Ellington - Never No Lament: The Blanton Webster Band

This 3 CD set cherry picks the best cuts from the mammoth 25 CD RCA Duke
Ellington centennial boxed set.    You get 75 tracks featuring the talents of
Jimmy Blanton, Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Ray Nance, Cootie Williams, Rex Stewart,
Billy Strayhorn, et al.  This was perhaps the best band Ellington ever led and was
arguably the greatest band of the swing era.  This is beyond essential listening.

Cab Calloway - Are You Hep to the Jive?

The 22 tracks on this CD are taken from recordings from 1939 to 1947.  Calloway
always had top flight talent in his band.  Even Dizzy Gillespie did a short stint with
Calloway.  At $6.99 on Amazon.com this CD is a steal.

Count Basie - The Complete Decca Recordings

I know you asked for recommendedations on 1940s music but I have to cheat
a little here.  This set includes everything the Count Basie Orchestra recorded
for Decca between 1937 and 1939.  This music features none other than Lester
Young on tenor sax, and for that reason alone it is too important to pass up.

Glenn Miller - The Golden Years: 1938-1942

During the 1930s and 40s (the swing era), jazz became the dominant
form of American popular music.  So the lines between pop and jazz
were somewhat blurred.  But Miller's recordings often lacked something
that was always a core tennent of jazz: improvisation.  Still, whether
you call it jazz or pop is beside the point.  It is great music.  This inexpensive
4 CD set from Proper Box UK is outstanding.  There are 98 tracks and just
about every single hit Miller recorded at the height of his popularity is
here.

Earliest Dexter Gordon with Nat Cole on piano is quite good. So to (already mentioned) is Louis Jordan. Great stuff!

I would heartily recommend you get the 10 DVD boxed set "Jazz" by Ken Burns. While it has its strengths and weaknesses, it will give you thoroughly entertaining overview of the pantheon that is 20th century Jazz, with special emphasis on pre '50s artists. It will help you narrow down your preferences. I got mine from this source.

BTW, The Charleston was from the '20s.

Don't forget to check the CD collection at your local library. Ours has an excellent collection of jazz and pop from the 1940s that has been re-released on CD. Everything from Louie Jordon and Benny Goodman to Charlie Shavers, Winifred Atwell and Hildegarde.

Doh! Forgot! One of my favorite recordings: Nat King Cole Trio, "Live at the Circle Room", 1946. Love the King.

Check out this offering from Dizzy Gillespie....one of the prominent band leaders of the day.

These two Diz discs bookend two-years'-worth of late-'40s Gillespie orchestra recordings with some earlier Teddy Hill Orchestra and Lionel Hampton Orchestra sides...
(It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing... )

The Complete RCA Victor Recordings....   :thumb:
