Newbe Looking for Center and Surrounds
« on: 17 Feb 2010, 08:39 pm »
I am a new owner of a great pair of RM 30s and loving the sound.  My goal is to put together an HT system to go in the basement theater that I haven't started yet.  So, I am gathering info about HT construction and about audiophile hardware while snagging equipment as I can find deals.  Thank you all for knowledge and tips that continue to help me along this road.  I would love to find anyone who is changing equipment and would have a VMPS center or surrounds for sale.  Please let me know if you have an RM 30C, LRC, or RDSs to sell.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary,
I was a longtime 5.1 VMPS customer (RMX's as mains, RM30C as center, 626R's as surrounds).  I've since moved to other speakers, but have an older 626 QSO (non-ribbon) that would make a decent center channel (used it as center before I did the RM30C).  PM me if interested in a cheap 626 QSO, even as a stop gap..

I am discussing the possibility of getting either a part or all of this system with the seller.  There is the little problem of getting the stuff from Florida to Denver, but it's not impossible.  Certainly, I could use a RM 30M as a center but would rather get the 30Ms to someone who wants them and use a 30C or LRC for the center.

Thanks, ted_b, for the 626 offer, but since the 30s that I have sound fine now by themselves and since I won't have the room done for a while, I will wait.  I will think it over, though.

Thanks, everyone...

Gary

I would use the Florida RM 30s along with th dipoles for a 7.1 system. Than all your lacking is the center. If you have time you can pickup a LRC from John later on.

If you find a set of RM40s you want to split for center duty, contact me, I'd be interested.

An RM40 for a center channel?  Yikes!  I had the RM30C as a center channel, and thought that was overkill.  The RM40 would be just punishing (not to mention hard to place).

Placement of the RM40 for center duty would be behind an acoustically transparent screen and mounted horizontally. A front stage of 3 rm40's would be killer!

I could see an RM40 behind a screen, but would the screen bounce because of the 12 inch woofers (not to mention the passive radiator)?  It would be an interesting experiment.

I had my RM30C on top of a RPTV.

Hey Bob,

Not that hard.  I have several clients with RM40 Centers.

This picture is of the temporary stand.  The new stand is higher and places the RM40 just under the 110" screen which also came later.

Here is another with RM v60 mains

Also notice the two Son's of AMPZILLA in the Rack on the bottom picture :eyebrows:

Wow that looks like a waste of a beautiful fire place. If there is one thing I like better than listining to quality audio, its listining with a raging fire in the fire place. Why dont you look into some-thing smaller with ribbons such as the Sunfire Cinima ribbon two's for surround rears and the crm 2-c for the center. Sunfire also has a beautiful bi polar side channel if 7.1 is desired. You will need a lot of power however. These little speakers are tiny but have an amazing and large sound stage 5 feet of ribbon wound up into a 7 inch unit. They are extreamly wife friendly. Check them out at : http://www.sunfire.com/xtseries.asp

Mort,
Complaining about the space a system like the V60 takes up, is like complaining that your Ferrari has no trunk room.
Have you ever heard the RM40’s or any of the VMPS line? I can tell you the music coming from these speakers is intoxicating.  I have a LRC now and it matches well with the 40’s sound wise, it just doesn’t have the output of a 40. Listening to music in Trifield (a Meridian DSP that uses the front three speakers to create a sound stage) I’m pushing this smaller speaker more than I care to.
The Carvers look interesting, but it looks like they use one ribbon for both the mids and highs and the bass only extends down to 80Hz, not the ideal setup. But I have never heard them so it’s impossible to judge.

I am in no way criticizing the VMPS line, I have heard them and they did deliver, (intoxicating indeed) My criticism was allocated to the blatent miss use of a good looking harth. True the crm-2 satellites require a subwoofer but that is the genius of a 7.1 system you can hide the low freq drivers. The sound from the crm-2's are also intoxicating particularily when set up proprely and I thought they would make for a wounderful match with the VMPS front channels in a non comprimizing small size. Just a sugestion not a critique. If you ever got the chance to listen to the Carver amazings, These little speakers are their desendent's with the same ribbon adding two high back emf mid drivers. There mid range is explosive and directional representing 7 years of development from Sunfire. Sorry if I have steped on anyones feet that was not my intention. Check out this interveiw with the developer it's cool http://www.sunfire.com/reviews/CRM2_SRS_210R_TAS_Aug2008.pdf Go to the bottom the interview is below the review.

Mort,

Sorry if I came across as combative I didn't mean for it to sound that way, it’s just that many people who run small speakers or bookshelf speakers don’t realize the full sound a set of floor standing speakers can create.  Yes, giving up the room to have these large speakers sometimes is a pain but I truly believe you can’t get the same sound from smaller speakers.  Not to say the sound from small speakers is bad in anyway, it’s just not the same as a multi driver floor standing set. This of course is only my opinion derived from the limited exposure I’ve had to smaller speakers. To that end, if you want big, full sound, the best way to get it is with big full range speakers. To prove my point, take a look at any speaker manufacturer, their flagship models are usually large multi-driver floor standing speaker.

Actually, they use the ribbons just for the highs, while the mid-bass handles the bulk of the music.
