Candela Tube Rolling - Any Recent Discoveries
« on: 17 Feb 2010, 02:52 pm »
I have not seen anything on Candela tube rolling in the last several years, and was wondering if anyone has any new discoveries to share?

I have a pair of old Mullards that are oh so smooth, but the highs roll off more than I would like.  I put the stock JJ's back in and was shocked by the difference in sound - I had forgotten the difference that the tubes made.  I definitely prefer the Mullards, but would like to find something that is a bit more open and with more high end.  Any suggestions?

Wow John 61 views and no one responded. I am using a pair of 1960's Telefunken. I have tried a few of the other tubes on the other thread and was not crazy about them. These seem to give me more detail and dynamics. Not heavy in the low end and not crazy on top just plain detail across the whole band if you understand what I am saying. Some of the others were heavier in the bass or to strong in the midrange to me. I wanted to try the Mullard cv4003 but I am going to wait awhile.

My favorites were the 60's Telefunken and Amperex, both excellent tubes with the Candela.

John,

I stand by my last post in the old thread:  "The 1961 Amperex ECC186/7316 made in Holland with the D getters sound excellent.  I think it was well worth the $$ to get this leap in sound quality".

Alex G did some mods to my Candela a few months ago and he listened to the Amperex 7316's..he said they were a very quiet tube.

Many people prefer the RCA cealrtops...IMHO the Amperex give you a little more of what the RCA have to offer.

HI boys,
I have a question about the Candela, it is not about tube rolling, so excuse me If seems out of topic, but you all here looks Candela experts.
As the Candela have only one tube per channel, I wonder If it is a tube buffer preamp, or are a preamp with Gain??
Thanks for any tip, Gustavo

I just ordered a matched set of 1960's  Radiotechnique (Amperex's French company) NOS for my Candela.  I will certainly post a review here but was wondering ahead of time if anyone has tried these particular tubes with their Candela?

I had the La Radiotechniques in the Candela for a while.  It was bested by the 60's Amperex and Telefunken to me, but it was in my top 3 tubes to use.

Just wanted to follow up about my experience with the Radiotechnique 1960's NOS 12au7.  This could all be in my mind but vocals have a more visceral presence.  They have more texture and sound amazing.  I have also noticed punchier bass and cymbals that have a metallic tone to them as well as that lovely sparkle.

I also installed some Herbie's Tube Dampers and I'm happy!

Thanks and have a great day,

Glad you liked the La Radiotechniques!  Now find some of the others and have fun.

My Candela just arrived and I replaced the JJ's with CBS/Hytron 1955 NOS 12AU7's and could not be happier!  Top to bottom is just fantastic.  Also have a pair of Herbies PET dampers on them.

Then I went and grabbed some Groneberg's off of Audiogon.  Two pair of RCA's and a pair of speaker cables.  I was using Signal Cable Analog II's and Signal Cable Ultra's for speaker cables.

I know that wire can't make a difference  but oh, man...I run rebuilt Magnepan MMG's so I don't have, or rather didn't have, much bass.  I turned the crossover down about 10 Hz and the volume back as well.   These things are just amazing!

I have found a pair of RCA 12AU7 NOS Black Plates that has bested my beloved Mullards.  They have a similar sound as the Mullards, but have more "air" and tad more detail in the upper ranges. Very pleased, but still searching for a "more better" tube.
