More opinions wanted on FetValve Double Ultra
« on: 16 Feb 2010, 05:53 pm »
I'm still scratching my head about going for the Double Ultra. I love my Ultra, and I've read through all of the posts from those who've gotten the Double. But I guess just to ask - is there anything that anyone preferred in the Ultra compared to how it sounds in the Double? Were there certain aspects of the Ultra, like air, extension, transparency, that may have been affected by the Double upgrade? A change in tonality or emphasis of one part of the spectrum over another?

This is not meant to start a flame war, so people easily baited should refrain from answering. Knowing the good people here I would believe we could have an objective discussion about this, if there's anything to discuss. :)

Hey Tony. No, no compromises. No change in tonality or emphasizing one part of the spectrum, other than improved dynamics overall and improved dynamics and definition in the lows. My speakers are very revealing, have an 85db sensitivity, and are pretty close to fullrange(mid to upper 20's). When I'm really cranking, there is definately more air, and transparency, than with the stock 550. I was never totally happy with the Salks until the 550 was doubled.  8)

Just belly up & buy it Tony!!!  You know you want it...it'll simply make an already superb sounding system sound even better. Strawberries aren't too far off if you catch my drift!!   :green:

Good to hear Marty. My speakers are also lowish sensitivity, and also go down to the mid/upper 20s. I've been second guessing for a while only because, with the TFK ECC801s, I can't imagine how much better an amp can get. :thumb:

Hi Phil! I guess I'll have to wait for the tax refund to come in then.

Yes, if it's a good strawberry year we will plan to have a very nice time! (the rest of you guys should ignore this part... it has to do with pies)

BTW, waiting to hear back from Joe on a date for the listening visit.

I should have mentioned that I too am running the TFKs in the Double 8)

It was a pretty big deal over here.

Pies are good, as are ECC801s, and also Doubles.

My Dahlquist DQ-10's are loving the headroom. So what if I never put the volume above 11 o'clock?

I can't speak to the minute differences because I never A/B'ed the amps, even though I had them both in the house for a little while.

It's cool. Do it. You'll love it.

Just belly up to the bar and say " I'll take a double, make it Ultra, Frank!"  :thumb: The bar was a metaphore for telephone; meaning call :eyebrows:

Well, I've already PM'd Frank. :green: But I have to hold on to my Ultra right now while I'm waiting for a modded piece to get back to me so I can listen to it once it's back in the system.
