Very interesting -- I can't compare the SST to the SST2, as I have never heard the SST. But I did compare the 4B ST to the 4B SST2. And the on the newer amp, the high end was more detailed and cleaner, the mids smoother, without sacrificing detail, and it definitely had more slam and grunt at the low end. And on tracks and volume levels that would make the ST clipping indicators flash red, I could not get the solid green of the SST2 indicators to even flicker orange at the same SPL.

Interesting. I'd like to get a 3BSST2 and bi-amp with my 4BSST. I feel I'll get the best of both worlds that way.

I don't agree with his assessment of the bass. Why the difference, perhaps the cd player, as I use the BCD-1? But even with my Sony NS9100ES the bass is more articulate. I however use MC stereo that processes the bass differently than two channel stereo.

I never did a dirct comparison, I just switched amps. I also switched the SST on the surround channels with the ST. On the first cd I played Grand Funk Caught in the Act, I could hear the bass guitars had more resolution and realism.

He's saying the SST has more slam that maybe valid, but the SST/2 has more vibe. 8)

What is odd is that the reviewer says that there is a new transformer in the 3B.As far as i am aware it's only in the 7UP. :green:

Quote:The 3B SST2 has a push on/off power switch, new output devices, increased power supply capacitance (30,000 MFD per channel), two new ultra-low-noise power transformers, and lower noise and distortion levels;

Perhaps James could set us straight.

Yes he is incorrect on the transformer comment.

Most reviewers have as much tech knowledge & hearing ability as shoemakers.

Just an estimated guess. I suppose a 2 would be alright for mids and hf's.

I agree.

There are many ways to get the best of both worlds.  You can also match your old 4B or 3B with a tube preamp and get the vocals + bass.  :lol:

Thank you. No tube preamp for me though. I'm cool with my BP6.
