integrating sms-1 between sp 1.7 and sub.
« on: 14 Feb 2010, 09:34 am »
It should be connected to sp1.7 sub out then sms1 sub in and then into sub itself, that is clear to me.

Whats not,is how should i set the crossover on SP 1.7,i think its crossover should
be left off and i dont think it can be set at full range(except in 2 ch bypass mode.)

So what should i do?
thanks

Hi Mike - what is a sms-1?  Does it determine the crossover point and slope on the Sub?

Shut off the crossover in the SMS (see the manual) and use the crossover in the Bryston processor. Remember when you switch the Bryston to BYPASS that you'll need to re-enable the crossover in the SMS since the Bryston delivers full range signal out the sub jack in BYPASS.

Yes, you want it to apply its equalization to the signal that will normally be sent to it, so that the integration of the mains and sub at the crossover frequency will be smooth. The Bryston and SMS crossovers would clash if both used, so the best choice of crossovers would be the Bryston since you want the bass management to be active in the Bryston. Shut the SMS crossover off.

I looked at the manual for your SMS and here is the section pointing out the shutting off the crossover in the SMS.

A word about SMS-1 outputs
The Velodyne SMS-1 is designed to operate using the full range audio signal for input when using
the digital built-in crossover. Most processors/receivers have a “subwoofer out” or LFE jack
that is internally filtered and designed to be used with a conventional amplifier and speaker. In
some rare cases, combining both an external crossover and the one internal to the SMS-1 may
result in low output and increased noise. In these installations you may need to bypass the
internal crossover in either the processor or Velodyne SMS-1.
In some installations, simply
setting one crossover to a higher frequency (such as 120Hz) will restore maximum
performance. To bypass the SMS-1’s internal crossover when the unit is being fed a low pass
signal from another crossover, refer to the SETUP instructions at step 14, below
.

Note that if you intend to utilize a sub in BYPASS mode you will have to re-enable the crossover in the SMS or re-enable the crossover in your sub itself, since the mains and sub are 'full range' when in BYPASS. This would indicate that you should use a fairly low crossover point when in BYPASS for your sub - about 40Hz would be a decent choice.
