Help finding a CD rack
« on: 13 Feb 2010, 02:55 am »
I'm trying to find a CD rack that isn't ugly as sin, probably an impossible task I know, but here's what I need. I need a CD rack that can hold 700+ CDs, it must be of the variety that can be open and shut as my almost 10 month old daughter is getting around very well these days and likes to put shiny CDs in her mouth. A lock would be preferable, but not required. The rack I currently have sits very nice against the wall and I'm noticing a lot of giant racks tend to stick out quite a bit (15" plus) so if such a thing exists it would be nice if it didn't stick out from the wall a huge amount. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I used to have a Sorice cabinet that was very nicely made and only about 8" deep.  They are modular and can be configured to any size and with doors if need be.  Check them out here:

Ugh! Baby just pulled a ton of CDs off the rack and was chewing on them again. Please please, lend a hand! The racks Honesthoff directed me to are nice, but a bit out of my price range.

Build one yourself, or hire a local woodworker.

The one I built is very easily made with basic tools and materials, not expensive, and looks nice -- I think.   Minimal skills required.  This is literally my first woodworking project, and it turned out just fine.  So how hard can it be?

It is only as deep as a CD, and you can build more as your collection grows.  Getting it off the floor:   keeps your toddler out;  eliminates the need for enclosing it with cumbersome doors (UGH!  those smoked glass doors are hideous dust magnets!);  makes it much easier to view all the titles without stooping / bending to the bottom shelves.  Your knees and back will thank you!   :thumb:

More photos and materials / assembly details in my gallery.

You can prevent your girl from getting to the CDs with something like this.  You put it around the rack; not your baby.

You can also check in on Denver Craig's List for a cabinet like this one for cheap.

Found this using more specific terms "wall cd rack":  http://www.standsandmounts.com/hubelomni1024cddouble-widewallmountmediarackblackomni-512b-wmx2sfk-2.aspx (more cheap options if you choose wall systems or floating wall systems option at this link)

You could also try searching Audiogon forums or just post a similar thread there too.

Ikea Billy / Benno system could work, though it's depth is listed as 11 inches.

We just did a drawer and tray model from Ikea that is pretty easy, no locks though...I can find the model and such if interested.

Didn't read this thread closely, but how about the nobility stuff that Grant Fidelity is running a deal on.

I'm sorry, no offense but that thing is friggin hideous, and will not come close to holding his collection!   :o

And for the same $$, you can build mine.  Not to brag, but honestly, which one is nicer and offers better features?

I know but it's cheap, in Denver and enclosed like he wants.   :dunno:

Yeah, but it misses on his other requirements:  nice looking and space to hold 700+ cd's.

I got one of these 1000CD Leslie Dame ? racks at Target online when it was on sale, under $150.  Looks decent and it was a snap to put together.

Thanks for the help guys, I think I might do one of the racks Grant Fidelity is doing a group buy for since I have had nothing but excellent luck with them. Good call Josh.  :thumb:
