Question on Older 4B's and 7B's
« on: 13 Feb 2010, 12:03 am »
Hi Fellas,

I have recently discovered Bryston Amps and im in Love... so much that I currently have 4 4B's pro amps they have roughly about 1.5 years of warranty left in them.  I have no reason to doubt that they will serve me for many years to come as 3 of them were seldom used by the orginal owner.  I have had them for about 2 months now and the sound is well music to my ears.  They are paired with a Marantz AV8003 reciever and 5 DIY Klipsch Lascala's.
I recently had a problem with some pro amps that I was using to power 4 Tc sound 15" subs in sealed enclousers.  Not to mention the fans are a bit loud.  So Ive been thinkin lately... thinkin of making another set of subs except out of a Tapped Horn design.  I was thinking of powering them with another Pair of Brystons maybe 7B's.  Unless the 4Bs would work as well.   Do the 7B's  output more than a pair of 4B's in bridged mode?  I could not find any specs on the older line just the newer st and sst series.  I did notice that on Brystons Web site a 7Bsst would do a 4 ohm load and the 4bsst said 8ohm.  Also do they have a built in filter that limits output in the sub 20hz area to cut out put?

I need to stick with older units as my pockets arent that deep. At some point My end goal is to upgrade over time and use a 6bsst and a 4bsst to power my 5 channels or maybe some PP300s.
Thanks guys for any info.

Nick

Hi Nick,

From experience the 7B out performs a bridged 4B (ST & SST) for bass use.

Bryston show 0-100Hz range without filters.

I prefer PP300 & 4B SST over the 6B. Personal taste.....

PS - Welcome to the Bryston family, you will find many helpful people here, post some pictures of your system...........

Andy.

the specs for the early range are at www.Bryston.ca under legacy amps in the technical section.
