Apogee Duet on iMac & a t-amp integrated amplifier
« on: 12 Feb 2010, 07:27 am »
Hi,

Can the Apogee Duet work with a integrated amplifier?  The Duet has Two unbalanced -10 dBV line outputs (normally for powered monitors) and now I would like to get a better pair of Passive stereo speakers so what is the best way to handle the connections?   Should I be also purchasing the Balanced Duet Breakout box too which connnects the duet with a balanced breakout box?

The proposed connection...
iMac>Apogee Duet>integrated T-amplifier>passive speakers
Will this work?

I'm trying to build a high quality home computer audio system and want to get this done right.  Thanks for any help.

Hello, and welcome to AC!!

Your proposed setup will work just fine, although I don't think you'll need the balanced breakout box if it comes with unbalanced outputs.

Thanks so much, really appreciate it.  So having unbalanced outputs connected to the amp won't matter as far as sound quality?  Sorry just a newbie.

Your T-amp (or at least all of the T-amps I've seen) doesn't have balanced inputs, only unbalanced.  The breakout cable supplied with your Duet has unbalanced 1/4" outputs, and should have included 1/4" to RCA adapters so that you can use a standard pair of RCA audio cables.

If you wanted to eliminate that extra 1/4" to RCA adapter, you could source cables that have a 1/4" plug on one end and an RCA plug on the other.
