14B-SST and choke upgrade
« on: 9 Feb 2010, 05:36 pm »
I've seen some mention of a "choke upgrade" or a "Swedish choke upgrade" but can't find a definitive explanation as to what this actually pertains to.

Do these terms refer to a power supply upgrade as referred to by the following article?

Hi,

The choke upgrade was added a while back - serial number 000515 and above - and was on the output stage of the amp to extend the extreme top end frequency response.

I had it done to my 14BSST some time ago.  There's probably a thread or two on this board about it

I have 14B SST serial number 200.

Is there a charge for the upgrade?

Was this only the 14B SST or did the 7B SST have the same option?
If so from what serial number,

Many thanks.

Andy.

Hi Andy,

Yes the charge was $250 for the 14B and $150 for the 7B's per unit.
Will check on the 7B serial number.

Andy you'll probably need to go via PMC... around 200 quid if i remember correctly for the 14b. They weren't aware of the mod and I had to explain it to them, but they said they could do it in the end.

Waiting for that serial James.  Judging the sound of my 7B, I think it has the choke upgrade already.

Can this be done by the local dealer out here in Vancouver, BC ?

Do all C-series 14B SST's have the new choke? What serial number started the C-series 14B SST?

They should.  The C-Series I believe was after the change made in the 14BSST noted here:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=53016.0

The upgrade for the 14B as Mike in service mentioned to me is from Serial number 507 and above at Date code 0639. The C faceplate was introduced before the mod.
The cost here in Canada is around $300 and the amp has to be sent back
to Bryston.
The link that Phil posted has all the information you need. It is a good history
Lesson on this legendary amp.

The link had some great info but I don't think it mentioned the C-series.
Maybe it is me......
It went from ST to SST then the SST got a facelift with a new faceplate calling it the C-series?? What serial number was the first SST C-series (new faceplate).

guys - James will confirm this but its my recollection that there was no "C" series. "C" stood for the "consumer" faceplate version of an amp and that the amp inside is exactly the same. The "C" version has the nice rounded out center to it (and probably all they supply now) Vs the older more industrial version. I don't think any choke mods are tied to being a "C" version faceplate. There could well be many "C" faceplates out there that do not have the choke mod ( I know of one for sure). So there are both faceplate versions out there that do not have the mod. I know that my older faceplate version has the mod because I was one of the first people to get it (according to Mike Pickett @ Bryston)

I think advising "C" series is a misnomer and can confuse people.

If I am wrong I apologize and James can beat me next time I drop into Bryston.

Yes the C-Series was a cosmetic change.
